September 9 Benchmark Assessments (DRA and LRP)

Opening-

Welcome staff to the meeting. Thank them for the hard

work they do each and everyday. Explain that todays
meeting will be focused on completing benchmark
assessments in reading correctly and effectively. We will
have 2 speakers, Joy Lange (LPS Reading Teacher Leader
for 1st grade) and Terri Ough (LPS Reading Teacher Leader
for 3rd grade). We will then have our 2 nd grade team share
how they use their quarterly Reading DRAs to schedule
daily guided reading groups. Before we get started we will
do a brief check-in.

Check-In-

Are there any housekeeping items we need to cover before

getting started. (i.e. Reports from curriculum liaisons,

committee reminders, any personal or professional news to

share with the staff.)
1st Activity- We will break into two groups.
Group 1 will be
Kindergarten-2nd Grade teachers and they will go into the
cafeteria for this presentation. Group 2 will be 3 rd-5th grade
teachers and they will stay here in the Coyote Den.
Support staff (Special Education, ELL, Interventionists, and
Specialists) may choose the group that best fits their
caseload of students. After the 20 minute presentations,
we will reconvene back in the coyote den. Please do not
take the this transition time as a break, because we will
have a short presentation/explanation by the 2nd grade
team. We will want to end right on time at 5:00.
Check for questions. Break.
*1st grade Teacher Leader from LPS will show the correct
way to complete a running record and how to score it using
a video clip. She will then answer any questions from
teachers.
*3rd grade Teacher Leader from LPS will explain the correct
way to use the weekly and unit assessments that have
replaced the LRPs we used in the past.
She will
demonstrate how to use the new McGraw Hill curriculum
running records and how to divide students into
appropriate reading groups. She will then answer any
questions from teachers.
2nd Activity- The 2nd grade team will share their large yellow chart paper
and google doc that they use each quarter to create
reading groups appropriate for each students needs. They
will explain their process.
ClosingAn administrator will thank everyone for attending and
being an attentive and active audience.
It will be
explained that this is an expectation for designing reading
groups and that these groups should be fluent depending
on the students growth each quarter. Check for questions.

October 6 Effective Feedback

Opening-

Welcome staff to the meeting. Thank them for the hard

work they do each and everyday. Explain that todays
meeting will be focused on providing appropriate and
effective feedback. Before we get started we will do a brief
check-in.

Check-In-

Are there any housekeeping items we need to cover before

getting started. (i.e. Reports from curriculum liaisons,
committee reminders, any personal or professional news to
share with the staff.)
1st Activity- Wagon Wheel- We need to form 2 large circles, one inside
circle and one outside circle. Partner with someone and
make the circles.
Explain that I will pose a question and allow each partner a
stated amount of time to answer the question or speak on
the topic while the partner listens (no speaking). We will
then switch and the partners will reverse their roles. This
will give everyone an opportunity to speak as well as listen.
After each question or topic, we will rotate to find a new
partner, and repeat the process. Dont forget to thank you
partner before moving after each question.
Check for questions.
1) 2 minutes each- share a celebration (big or small) from
today.
(Inner circle move 3 spots to the right)
2) 2 minutes each- share an example of how you used
formative assessment in your classroom today.
(Inner circle move 2 spots to the right)
3) 3 minutes each What do you know about providing
effective feedback? Share an example of when/how you
do it in your classroom.
(Outer circle move 3 spots to the right)
4) 1 minute each Describe something you want to learn
from todays staff development.
**While staff are talking, pass out enough articles to each
table and one large chart paper for each group.**
Before returning to the tables, have everyone number off
1-7. When they return to the tables, they need to sit
with their corresponding numbered group. They may
take a minute to collect their things before sitting at the
new spot.
2nd ActivityPowerPoint Presentation
3rd Activity- Within your group, read the short description of the Key of
Effective Feedback. On your poster you will need to write a
definition or description, then each group member will
need to write an example of how they already use that key.
Share out to the whole group.
Allow time for whole group discussion, if any.

Turn to an elbow partner and share something new you

learned about giving effective feedback or a goal you want
to try/do in your classroom from this day forward.
Closing-

If time, show the short clip from Bill Gates on TED Talks.
This is a clip about teachers receiving feedback.
