LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT PLAN

Personal Statement
I believe that everyone deserves the best quality of life possible, regardless of the
situation you were born into. I believe that quality of life revolves around independence and the
ability to complete everyday tasks. Many of us take these tasks for granted and do not consider
the impact the inability to complete these tasks may have on an individual. For as long as I can
remember my parents taught me to the importance of equality and to always treat other as you
would want to be treated. This statement has stayed with me for all these years and has driven me
into the profession of occupational therapy.
Mission and/or Vision Statement
I am at my best when I have a plan with designate duties to follow. I will try to prevent
times where there is no organization or order to a task. I will enjoy my work by finding
employment where I can help people. I love to educate people on ways in which they can find
the help they need. I will find enjoyment in my personal life through taking care of my loved
ones. I will find opportunities to use my natural talents and gifts such as being a good mother,
taking care of the people around me, making decisions, organizing, and planning events. I can do
anything I set my mind to. My lifes journey is about becoming a mother and being the best
mother I can be. I will be a person who always thinks of others first. I will do anything to help
someone else succeed. I am the person people call when they dont know what else to do, or
where to turn. I will stop procrastinating and start working on my communication, maintaining a
positive attitude, and accepting change. I will strive to incorporate the following attributes into
my life: inspiration, support, and motivation. I will constantly renew myself by focusing on the

LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT PLAN

four dimensions of my life: daily exercise, weekly church, seeking help when needed, and
keeping loved ones close.
Strengths
My biggest strengths are compassion and empathy. When I was little, my family referred
to me a little Buddah. They say, from the time I was little, I always wanted to please people. I
remember getting physically sick to my stomach if people would argue in front of me. Although,
I have been able to handle conflict in a more appropriate manner, I still aim to please people and
make people feel better. I feel this goes along with my empathy for others. I take pride in the
ability to put myself in other peoples situation. I not only have this ability with humans, but this
empathy even carries over to animals. This is displayed in my vegetarian diet. I feel that these
two strengths are ideal for an occupational therapist (OT) to possess. I feel that in order to truly
connect with clients, an OT must be compassionate and empathetic toward the individual they
are treating. I would argue that these two strengths alone would allow an OT to deliver
exceptional, client-centered care.
Growth Needs
My growth needs revolve around my desire for order and organization. At first glance,
one may think of these traits as strictly positive, and to some extent they can be. However, when
these two characteristics are taken to the extreme, they interfere with the flexibility and the
adaptability needed to be a successful OT. Although, order and organization can be helpful for a
practicing therapist, I need to be able to take a step back and realize when too much order or too
much organization is not always a positive attribute. In the future, I need to work on finding an
appropriate balance between these two characteristics.

LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT PLAN

Leadership Model
The leadership model that best reflects me is the situational leader. A situational leader is
one that acknowledges that different situations require skills from different leadership styles. I
feel like there are numerous times that I choose to determine a situation before deciding how I
am going to handle it. This leadership model also suggests that there is no perfect leadership
style that can be implemented into every situation. Instead, the type of leadership style must be
adjusted in order to meet the development of the potential followers in that given scenario. I fully
agree with this leadership style, and I have followed it in many of the leadership positions that I
have been a part of over the years. I feel that I will continue to follow this leadership model in
my future practice and implement it during my roles as a leader.
