Definition of Overfishing -deplete the stock of fish in (a
body of water) by too much fishing

Why overfishing is a problem

Because the aquatic ecosystem is all

interconnected, the fish that are dying (due to overfishing)

cannot serve as a food source to other species. Therefore
those species die, along with the rest of the food chain that
has been stripped of their food source.
Oceans cover 70% of the Earths
surface. If the living creatures in our waters become extinct,
a huge part of our ecosystem will be wiped out entirely.
If we as humans are less concerned
with the extinction of part of our ecosystem, then we should
think of the economy. As the fish population declines, the
jobs of fishermen decline as well for fishermen will have
nothing to fish and sell if they become extinct.
Ways of overfishing and why these
techniques are harmful
Gillnetting
a form of
fishing that uses nets that are almost invisible
to fish. Fish then become trapped and
entangled in the net. This type of fishing is
used to catch sardines, salmon and cod, but,
unfortunately, these nets can also trap and kill
other animals like sharks and sea turtles.
Bottom trawling
This is when
fishers drag a net along the ocean floor. This

type of fishing is used to catch small fish and

shrimp, however the nets catch multiple other
organisms that are just thrown back into the
ocean or left to die. Not only is this type of
fishing harmful to the unused organisms, it is
also harmful to the ocean floor. Dragging a
heavy net across the ocean floor damages
habitats which leads to the depletion of aquatic
species.
Dredging,
like trawling
is when fishers use a large metal net and drag
it across the ocean floor. Dredging has similar
effects as trawling, in ruining habitats and
harming species, however instead of small fish
and shrimp, dredging picks up oysters and
other shellfish.
