Song

Song title- Brain

Artist- Banks

Genre- dark R&B

What are the conventions of music videos from this genre?
In these music videos, the females usually wear minimal clothing in order to get the
attention of the males who would watch their music videos.
An example of this is Beyoncé’s video ‘dance for you’ where she is wearing a very
short dress that shows her underwear. They usually wear high heels to ensure their
bodies look perfect.
The only times this can be broken is if the artist is dancing. This can be seen in
Cassie’s video ‘Official girls’.
The hair and makeup is usually very flawless and made up. This is because they need
to show themselves as being perfect in the eyes of the viewer.

How are you going to meet these conventions in your video?
Style (in-concert and ‘as live’ footage; animation (stop motion, digital); interpretative; narrative;
impressionist; surrealist; pastiche; parody; referencing; homage)

I am not going to be using the obvious conventions for my music video.
Instead of having females dancing or anyone dancing, I will be telling a
story in my music video.
I will be telling the story of how a boy is having troubles with drugs and
his parents don’t know how to deal with it. I think the content of my music
video will go well with the lyrics since they both have very similar
meanings.

Costume
Since I am using a few different characters in my music the costumes are going to
differ with each character.
For example my mum who is going to be in my production who will be acting as
herself (a mum) so she is going to be wearing casual clothes as what she would
wear every day.
Another character in my production is going to be my friend Gabriel. In the production
he is going to be playing the role of Dylan

Lighting
The lighting I am going to be used is natural lighting (sun and night). I also will be
using lighting for house lighting.

Locations
The locations that I am going to be using for my music video are going to be my
house, also I will be filming some outside my house and also in college. I have
decided to use these locations because I feel as if they will go great with the song I
have chosen to use.

Shot types
I will be using a large variety of different shot types in my music video and different
camera angles.
For example I will using close ups, long shots, extreme long shots, extreme close ups
and also medium shots in my music video.

Research
What music videos have you watched to research your genre?
Since I have chosen do the song ‘Brain’ by banks. I had to research a lot of similar

artists for banks. I would say that the genre for the song would be dark R&B. I have
watched very similar artists to banks for example I have listened to Sam Smith who
has said to be very similar to banks in the way they sing and also the music that is in
the background.

How have these videos influenced the decisions made? Include screen shots of the key
influences

The music videos that I have been researching have had a large impact
on the decision I have made when deciding how to film and produce my
music videos.
I would say that the lyrics and the actual music with it is quite depressing
although it would go great with the story I am trying to tell in my music
video.
Also in general the way dark R&B is played. For example banks. It is a
great genre to create a story with the visual and also the music in the
background.

Lyrics
Insert the song lyrics below
But it's all the same
I could have foreseen
That you would act like you are
Oh so cool you seem
Blending with that scene
Wearing what you think is hard
I can see you struggling
Boy, don't hurt your brain
Thinking what you're gonna say
Cause everything's a game
Always trying to calculate
Trying to look smart but not too smart
To threaten anything they say
But it's all the same
I could have foreseen

That you would act like you are
Oh so cool you seem
Blending with that scene
Wearing what you think is hard
I can see you struggling
Boy, don't hurt your brain
Thinking what you're gonna say
Cause everything's a game
Always trying to calculate
Trying to look smart but not too smart
To threaten everything they say

Meaning of the song

Does the song have a meaning? If so, what is it?
I feel as if there isn’t an obvious meaning behind the song but you can create a
meaning by the content. The song is very peaceful and I feel I can create a very
emotional music video by the lyrics and also what you see.

How will your visuals relate to the song? (Illustrate, Amplify or Disjuncture)
The visuals for my music video will create an emotional response to the lyrics. It will show
how Gabriel my main character struggles with drugs and how it is effecting his mum who just
wants the best for him in life.

Mood board

Create a mood board showing what ‘look’ your music video will have. Add images
showing ideas of mise-en-scene, characters, costumes and colours that will be
present in the different shots.
The main character in my music video is going to be similar to Adam Deacon who is
in the images below.
I have chosen him because the clothes that Adam Deacon wears are similar to what
my character is going to be wearing for example, hoodies.
