WEEK 10 ASSIGNMENT

1. Steve has observed three-year-old Jerrod having a difficult time during circle
time. He seems to fidget, play around, and does not really pay attention,
especially if he sits farther away from Steve. Bridget, the assistant, notices that
Jerrod is more attentive if he sits closer to Steve and thinks it might be that Jerrod
may have trouble with his hearing. What is the next step they should take? If they
feel Jerrod does have difficulty hearing, what should they do? They should
continue to observe Jerrod and document his behavior. Once they realize he
is showing all the sign of a child with a hearing problem they need to visit
with the parents and recommend that they go see their family physician.
2. Emma has been in your care since she was 8 months old. She was happy and
loved to explore. She is now 13 months old, but seems not to be growing as fast
as she should and seems more listless than she used to be. Her mother doesnt
want Emma to get too fat, so she has taken milk from a bottle and replaced it with
apple juice. She wants Emma to have as much juice as she wants, not only at
meals but at naptimes, in a bottle. How would you handle this? I would inform
the mother that Emma many be lacking a vitamin and she should take her to
her pediatrician to be observed before she takes milk out of her diet. Then I
would inform her that milk is an important component for her daily
nutrients and how too much juice can cause a child to have a weight problem
due to the large amount of sugar juice contains. It will also cause diarrhea
along with tooth decay.
3. You notice a child who has difficulty speaking so others can understand him.
What kinds of special observations might you make? How would you approach
the family with your concerns? What referrals would you make? What resources
would you utilize? I would observe the child to see if they are talking in
monotone, stuttering, or if they are having and difficulty understanding or
being able to communicate with others. I would discuss with the parents how
their child is showing all of the caution signs for speech and language
difficulties. I would refer them to their family physician or speech therapist.
I would also suggest that they check with the county health department to
further their questions or concerns.
4. Jamey has a fever and the first signs of a rash. How would you record this
condition with precise words? Jameys temperature is above 101 degrees
which indicates her body is fighting off infection. The rash on her skin could
be harmless but needs to be taken seriously until ruled otherwise by a
professional physician.
5. Why is the daily quick health check so important? Why should it be performed at
the very beginning of the day as each child arrives? To ensure the health safety
for the other children if a sick child was to enter the facility. Doing this at the
beginning of the day will prevent to passing of illness and disease.

6. A child in your family care is not eating well. What would you do to appraise the
situation? I would make notes and keep a record of all the food the child
consumes on a daily bases. I would also observe the childs condition and
behavior then I would get with the parents and communicate on the well
being of their child.
7. If you suspected a child in your care of having lead poisoning, what symptoms
would you observe? Irritability, insomnia, colic, hearing difficulty, lack of
eye-hand coordination, slow muscle and bone growth, and anemia.
8. List the four different ways diseases are transmitted. Write several sentences
about each. What are three diseases related to each method of transmission?

Respiratory tract-Infectious droplets from the mouth, nose, and eyes


get in the air via talking, sneezing coughing, and blowing nose. These
droplets can land on toys, food, or other things in the environment.
Three diseases are colds, strep throat, and bacterial meningitis

Fecal oral-Germs from the stool of one person get in the mouth of
another person and are swallowed. It is also spread by not washing
hands after toileting and preparing food.
Three diseases are Hepatitis A, Giardia/giardiasis

Direct contact-Infected article or secretion from infected area can


spread through touching toys, faucets, food, and bedding touch by an
infected person. It can also be spread by parasites through shared
hats, combs, brushes or dress-up clothing.
Three diseases are Impetigo, Lice, and Scabies

Blood contact-Infected blood from one person entering the


bloodstream of another person. Infected blood can come in contact
through cuts, chapped hands, and biting, bloody nose and skinned
knees.
Three diseases are Hepatitis B, HIV, and Aids

9. Locate the Oklahoma immunization schedule. Compare to the immunization


schedule in textbook. What are the differences? The book does not show some
shots that need to be given such as polio were Oklahoma requires it, the book
recommends shots be given early in age and Oklahoma says not required for
school such as HIB and PCV.
10. Go to http://www.headlice.org and look at the games that have been created for
teaching children about lice. Take a game and write a one paragraph critique of

the information found in the game. List 5 things are good or could be improved
with the game.
I choose the Head Lice Game. This game provided how hard it is to catch
and kill lice that are on a persons head. It also showed how fast they moved
making it very difficult to catch them and kill them. It showed that it takes a
special comb to remove lice from your hair but that was about all the
information from this particular game. The things that could be improved
with this game are 1. More information 2. Lice can be different sizes 3. It
could have showed what lice eggs look like 4. The color of the lice 5. It could
have been narrated for children to understand
11. Go to http://www.apic.org and www.scrubclub.org and search under hand hygiene
for several good articles about the importance of hand washing. Discuss using
things other than soap and water for hand hygiene. Write a paragraph on hand
washing in early childhood education and write a paragraph on new
understanding of hand washing.
You could use hand sanitizers or alcohol gel for hand hygiene.
Teachers and staff need to be trained on the proper way to wash their hands to
make sure that all germs are killed. Hand washing is the most effective way to
stop the spread of diseases and illness in the child care environment. There are
specific times of the day that the teachers should wash their hands. These
include before working with children, before diapering, and before preparing
and serving bottles and food, etc.
Accurately measuring hand washing behavior is a critically important step in
understanding and improving overall health. The ability to understand and
change hand washing behavior lies at the core of successful hygiene intervention.
If more people understood the importance of hand hygiene and the risk they
take by not thoroughly washing more people would practice good hygiene.
