Activities in Relation to my BMI Program

At first, programming is my hobby! I feel so happy whenever I can create a

program that will lessen the time spent by my co-teachers in some computations.
After seeing how MAPEH teachers computed the BMI of our students, I was
challenged to create a program to help them. Finding the square of the height is
easy as well as finding the BMI, but my problem is how I can make a formula to find
the ages of the students and much more, formula for finding their respective
nutritional status which is based from a table with ages ranging from 5 years old to
19 and above.
After completing the program, it was used by my co-teachers and they
requested if a summary can be filled in after encoding. Their request was granted
and a summary for every year level as well as a summary for the school were
included in the program. At First, it can only be used for year levels with 5 sections,
for the highest number of sections in our school is 5.
I then referred the program to Mr. Marino Cueto with the presence of the
division school nurse, Jenelyn Gelena, who asked me if we can test the program if it
works the way it should be and can I extend it to elementary schools. He also
suggested me to increase the number of sections from 5 to 12. I then adjusted the
number of sections to 12, included grade 1 to grade 6 aside from the previous which
only stakes first year to fourth year, but when I went to Adriatico Memorial School,
they told me that their Grade 1 has 21 sections and they also have preschool and
SPED. With this new information, I then again adjusted each sections from 12 to 25
with the assumption that it will be able to penetrate all schools in the Philippines, I
also included preschool and SPED, adjusted each grade summary, as well as the
summary of the school.
I then asked permission from then our acting superintendent, Madam Araceli
Rada-Salmorin, if I can present her the program, assuring her that I will allow the
division of Calapan City to use the program and that I will not collect any amount to
whoever will use it. She approved my request and sometime in January of 2012, I
presented my program. She also had some questions which I noted like How about
if a child was weighted a little bit late because he or she was absent during the
weighing period? Noting all her suggestions, I start working on them and prepare
the program for a half day seminar with TLE coordinators of each school in Calapan
City.
I conducted a seminar last February, 2012 in the Division Office attended by
all TLE coordinators of both elementary and secondary teachers of Calapan City.
Some minor problems were detected like: 1) they cannot edit the name of the
school from 2nd section onwards, 2) No dash in one of the birthdays 3) they were
unable to change the name of teacher at the lower part. Aside from these, they also
discover that the program is so accurate that we have discovered plenty of
discrepancies from their manual computation as compared to the result in the
program. After checking, they all agree that the errors were in the manual
computation and that the program is correct. I then promised the teachers that I will
see to it that I will fix the minor errors and a new and fixed program will be out
soon. Though minor errors were identified, a unanimous reaction from the teachers
that it will be of great help to them is the most rewarding thing I have ever received
for my hard works.
Three days after the seminar, I handed a cd that contain the fixed BMI
program entitled BMI Mother Copy(Final) to Mr. Cueto who will distribute it to all
TLE coordinators. From June, 2012, texts, calls and school visitation was done to
further fix and perfect the program.

As of now, the new name of the program is BMI-RCaringal(070712). I am also

working for the BMI program of children 0 months to 71 months. It will be used by
Calapan City or Oriental Mindoro Nurses.
After visiting some schools, I found out that there are sections in elementary
with only 2 male students. Printing a sheet containing only 2 students will again be
a burden so I decided to revise my program again. The new program is named BMI
Oct. 6, 2012
In the revised program, birthdays are encoded in one column where in the
previous, months, day and year are encoded in different columns. Male and female
now are encoded in the same sheet but a column for gender was added because
aside from the fact that there is a different table for boys and girls, the number of
male and female are included in the summary.
On December of 2012, I was asked by our Schools Division Superintendent,
Dr. Araceli-Rada Salmorin to submit a copy of my BMI Program to the Regional Office
and another one for the Central Office. Later that December, Central Office through
Mrs. Cariaga invited me to attend a seminar workshop that will be held on January
28 to February 1, 2013 at Los Banos, Laguna.
Some revisions were made again, because pre-elementary who are 5 years
old and below must be treated using a different table. Another added feature is that
it can accommodate unlimited number of sections per grade level.
A program for consolidation was also added. It can be used by all schools, all
districts, all divisions because it can accommodate unlimited number of schools or
unlimited number of districts.
The final copy of the program as of now is BMI-RONNIE D. CARINGAL(1-1213).
I was invited as the BMI speaker in Baden Powell International Hotel in
Laguna on January 29, 2013 and presented to the dieticians my program. All of
agreed that it will be of great help we are just going to test it before it will be
implemented in their respective regions.
After all the hard works, the time and money spent in completing the
program, all the revisions, all the sacrifices, until this very moment, all I know are
the benefits of the Department of Education, the Department of Health, the nurses,
the students and teachers, but personally, aside from self satisfaction, I do not know
what benefits it will bring to me.
A validation of the software was again conducted in Pangasinan. Now, a final
copy named BMI Software-HNC (final Copy-04-24-13) is ready for use.
