Triumphant Celebration
We are celebrating Palm Sunday weekend, which initiated
Jesus triumphal entry into Jerusalem for His last week prior
to the Cross. It is one of the few incidents in Jesus life
reported in all four gospels, an action by which He presented
Himself officially to Israel as their Messiah and the Son
of God. He had His disciples borrow a colt. The owner
responded as all of us must when He desires our time,
talents, and treasure, when the Lord has need of it (Mark
11:3). The young colt had never been sat upon. The Jews
regarded animals that had never been ridden as especially
suited for holy purposes (Numbers 19:2). In His omniscience, Jesus knew the
location of the animal and the disposition of the owners.
Pilgrims traditionally made their entrance to the Holy City on foot, but Jesus
would ride, showing that He did not come as a pilgrim, but as a King. When
a king came on a donkey and not on horseback, he came in peace. As Jesus
made His way, thousands shouted their welcome, pulled off their cloaks, and laid
them in the road. Palm branches were cut and thrown onto the lane or waved in
welcome. The palm branch was a symbol of victory. Many sang the traditional
welcome from one of the Psalms of Ascent, Hosanna (God, save us), blessed
is He who comes in the name of the Lord (Mark 11:9). All Christians celebrate
that He came the first time, not only to die for our sins, but to reign as King.
At 4:00 p.m. this Sunday, we will have a triumphant celebration service
Rejoicing in Gods Goodness as we follow the example in Joshua 4. You
are receiving river rocks this weekend and are encouraged to write a prayer,
scripture verse, or word on them and bring them to the brief afternoon program,
just as the Hebrews did (Joshua 8:32). As the Lord rolled back the Jordan River
to allow the Ark and the nation to cross safely, so we take our stones from the
river and build a memorial to show how God has allowed us to pay off the debt
of our buildings and build a great ministry base to touch the world.
When a child would ask the significance of the stone altar, the Jewish father
was not supposed to send the inquisitive child to a Levite priest, but to answer
himself concerning their meaning. We also have been brought out with a
mighty hand and with our eyes seen miraculous signs and wonders (Deut.
6:20-24). The Lord does not require cloaks or palm branches on a Jerusalem
road, but ongoing giving of finances and prayer. May we also bless the name of
the Lord throughout this Passion Week, remembering His death as we attend
the service on Good Friday and one of the Easter worship services. Blessed
be the Lord!
