SAINT THOMAS WATERFALLS AT MESANARGOS VILLAGE IN RHODES ISLAND GREECE

I am coming from a small but picturesque village, called Mesanargos, which lies 83 km, from the
town of Rhodes, capital of the homonymous island. It has plenty of beauties, such as the only
waterfalls in the island.
This is Saint Thomas Watefall. It is called like that because it is near the monastery of Saint
Thomas. The day of its celebration is Saint Thomas Sunday, which is celebrated every year, one
week right after Easter Sunday. That day, plenty of prayers, come to visit the waterfalls. The
beautiful gauge, formed there, green with plenty of running water, offers accommodation to
many species of birds and animals.
THE DISASTERUS HUMAN INTERVENTION
During the last years, however, some people who do not respect the environment have done
things that harmed the region. Lorry drivers have removed soil and stones, digging the hill of
the waterfall. The inhabitants have informed the community and stopped digging. There is a
relevant post at the villages blog (messanagros-rhodes.blogspot.gr), which criticizes the people
responsible.
SOME PEOPLE DECIDED TO USE THE WATERFALLS AS A WASTE DUMP
About a year ago, some people threw waste from the street right above the waterfall. Such
waste, were cupboards, fridges, chairs and other objects. Vaggelis Pavlidis, a famous
cartoonist, who lives in the village nearby and loves the region, visited the area and saw all
these and complained in the local newspapers and blogs (at the www.iporta.gr site).
CLEANING THE WATERFALLS
As soon as the issue became known, the church council, the cultural club and the local board,
planned cleaning actions on a Sunday. Many inhabitants helped and waste was removed. The
waterfalls returned to the previous natural state. Visitors can now enjoy the natural beautiful
area. It was decided that the locals would visit the waterfalls frequently to take care of it.
The waterfall is a clean region now. Crystal waters running, among green trees and the sounds
of birds. Visitors are welcome to enjoy the unique region.
VISIT TO THE WATERFALLS AT SAINT TOMAS FESTIVAL
Exactly one week after Easter Sunday, which is Saint Thomas Sunday, all prayers will come to
the waterfall. I am always happy to invite my friends and see it.
A BEAUTIFULL PHOTO OF THE WATERFALLS
During winter, the waterfall IS honored by nature. See, it rains. Even in summers though, when
it dries, it retains its beauty.
LAKE AT THE WATERFALL
Right at the riverside, small lakes are formed. Frogs, tortoise, little fish live there. Rabbits, lamp,
birds and partridges can be found there too.
AS THE LOCALS SAY: THE WATERFALL IS PRECIOUS
