3Critical Technology Essay

Choose a technology and write a critical research essay that examines its
relationship to power. Use 6 outside sources.

LEARNING GOALS
1) To improve our critical thinking, reading and writing skills.
2) To complicate the idea of technology and its relationship to power.

THE PROJECT
There will be 4 major components of Project 3:

1) Work Plandue to Eli before 03/04/1520 points
In 400-500 words, describe the project you are envisioning. What technology would
you like to study? Why? What kind of theory are you interested in using? Why does
your project matter?

2) Source Sheetsdue to Eli before 03/23/1540 points
You will need 6 outside total for this project. Some of these can come from materials
we have read as a class, but you must find at least 3 sources on your own. For each
of these 3 you find on your own, fill out a Source Sheet that summarizes, questions,
and reflects upon the source. The Source Sheet template can be found on D2L.

3) Outlinedue to Eli before 03/30/1540 points
Create a framework for your paper. Map out the main point of each paragraph and
justify your choices. The form/format of your outline is up to you, but you must find
a way to convey to me how you plan to structure your paper and why.

4) Final Paperdue to Eli before 04/13/15100 points
The general guidelines for the final paper are as follows: 7-8 pages in length;
standard MLA formatting; critical use of your 6 sources. (you will also need a full
draft of your paper done by Monday 04/06). You will have a rubric with more
specific information to work from closer to the deadline.

FURTHER EXPLANATION OF SOURCES
You must use a minimum of 6 sources in this essay. Here is a breakdown of what is
needed for your collection of sources.

Source 1Christian Fuchs book, Social Media: A Critical Introduction.
Source 2choose one other reading weve done so far this semester.
Source 3Interview

You will need to conduct a one-on-one interview with someone who has

experience relevant to your paper topic. Speak with an expert, a scholar, or a

user of the technology you are studying.

Sources 4, 5 & 6Find on your own. They must either be scholarly sources or highly
critical and in-depth popular sources. *These are the sources for which you will fill
out Source Sheets (explained in previous section).

SUBMISSION
All parts of this project will be submitted through Eli by the assigned dates. Attach
them as Word documents. No other kinds of files will be accepted. All deadlines are
before the start of class.

*In total, Project 3 will be worth 20% of your overall grade in the course*
