Classroom Technology Plan
NEEDS ASSESSMENT
Takoma Park Elementary School has Pre-Kindergarten students to 2nd grade students.
The school improvement plan focuses on reading. The goal is to improve reading levels for
Kindergarten to 2nd grade. Not all students met the grade level benchmark by the end of last
school year; therefore, students are in need of more support in reading. There are approximately
600 students. About 30% of the population is ESOL, 5% is Special Education students, and 40%
is Free and Reduced Meals (FARMS). There are 22 students (12 girls and 10 boys) in my
kindergarten classroom. There are 9 ESOL students in my class. In my classroom, there are 6
students (3 girls and 3 boys) who below grade level. These students need help with identifying
letters and letter sounds.
The school has one computer lab with 22 computers. Each classroom has an interactive
white board, ELMO document camera, and four student computers. There is a Promethean
board, an ELMO document camera, and four student computers in the classroom. Within the
classroom, students use the computers independently to play literacy games that teach letter
sounds. The Promethean board is being used as an independent activity by having students
practice identifying letters in their name. These activities are engaging for the students, but I
think they need to be enhanced a bit. The students complete these activities in groups and so the
students help each other, which I think then some students will not learn to be confident and
independent. The software that is used on the computer does not always work and only one
student can use the Promethean board at a time. The student computers need to be monitored for
performance regularly and the Promethean board should be used with ActiVotes so each child
can be engaged throughout the whole activity. All students will benefit from more meaningful
technology integration which will help them continue to succeed.
VISION STATEMENT
I believe technology is an important part in students learning. Technology is such a
major part of our everyday lives. Incorporating technology into our classrooms would help
students make real world connections. I believe all students are engaged when technology is
used in learning. I also believe it is important for students to explore on their own through
student centered learning opportunities. All students succeed in hands-on learning opportunities.
I believe technology will help all learning styles. Technology provides visuals for those
learners, audio can be used to enhance technology learning for the auditory learners, and handson experiences for the kinesthetic learners.
In my classroom I use the Promethean board and student computers daily for instruction.
I think the students use technology in a basic way and think it could be enhanced to provide more
meaningful learning opportunities. I would like to use the ActiVotes as often as possible, which
could improve student learning. They are engaging and could guide instruction based on results
from votes conducted with the class. Technology will be used to improve student learning. All
types of learners will be able to use the technology successfully to help improve their learning.
ELA-Literacy.RF.K.1d Recognize and name all upper- and lowercase letters of the
alphabet.
The Maryland Technology Literacy Standards for students that they will achieve are Standard 1.0
Technology systems develop foundations in the understanding and use of technology systems
and Standard 3.0 Technology for learning and collaboration use a variety of technologies for
learning and collaboration.

letters, sound out words, rhyme words, and create stories. Students can navigate the software on
their own and practice literacy skills through engaging activities.
By using the Promethean board and ActiVotes, students will master the Standard 3.0
Technology for learning and collaboration: use a variety of technologies for learning and
collaboration of the MTLSS. Students will use technology tools in an instructional setting and
collaborate with peers to complete assignments. Through the use of the Promethean board and
ActiVotes, I will be able to provide students with literacy activities that will help them practice
the skills they will need in order to improve their reading skills. The ActiVotes provide me with
the ability to create questions and use online resources that will encourage the students to
complete interactive literacy activities.
STAFF DEVELOPMENT
Montgomery County Public Schools offers a Professional Development course titled
Orientation to the Interactive Classroom. The course will help provide me with more skills
that are needed to use the ActiVotes. All of these resources will help improve students learning
because it is interactive, student centered and engaging. I plan to continue my education through
taking courses and research best practices using the Promethean board and ActiVotes to provide
the most meaningful curriculum for my Kindergarteners. By attending courses about the use of
technology in our schools, I can also provide support to the staff in my school.
TIMELINE
A way to receive funding for this software would be to ask the PTA to purchase it for our
classroom because they budget to provide money for instructional materials that can be used in
the classroom. After I am able to purchase the software, I would request for the IT specialist to
help install the software on the computers in my classroom. I would expect to have all of this
installed by the middle of November. I would then provide students with many learning
opportunities to use the software and answer daily literacy questions using the ActiVotes.
EVALUATION
Everyday the students would have the opportunity to use the software independently and
whole group and small group learning on the Promethean board. Daily questions can be
answered as a class using the ActiVotes. This will then give use data based on how the students
answered and I can determine what students answered for each question. This can then guide my
instruction for future lessons and what areas the students need more support in. I can also
conduct other assessments that determine if students can identify all letters and sounds, identify
beginning sounds of words, and rhyming words. Some questions that can be asked are, What is
the beginning sound of dog? The choices could be audio sounds of different letters and the
students have to select the correct answer by pressing the corresponding button on the ActiVote.
Another question could be, What word rhymes with cat? The choices could have images of a
book, a hat, and a doll. Students would have to say the word of each image to determine the
rhyming word. This assessment would be engaging for the students that they would not even
realize they were doing work. Students enjoy sharing their answer so providing all students with
the opportunity to answer the same question at the same time is a great way to please them and
assess their learning.
