Art Context- Students are responsible for placing meaning within
their work and the narrative used to describe their work.
Production- Students will work diligently and think critically to
create an original work of art.
I have selected this particular approach because students use
technology everyday. By introducing tablets to the classroom I will
create a digital connection to the visual arts allowing students to
enhance the visuals as well as present them in a way todays
students are familiar with.

Description of Activities and Setting

When students enter classroom, lights are dim and teacher is playing the
character-building portion of the game skyrim, scrolling through the
constellations created by the game designers. This will grab the students
attention on a fun and feeling of playing at home level. This is used as an
example of what the students will be doing in the class, creating their own
constellation and its history. Once students are paying attention teacher will
turn on the lights and begin to discuss the assignment (using a game everyone
is familiar with). Review that this assignment will pull student knowledge of
freshman year English class that touched on Greek mythology.
Teacher will describe that the assignment is to do research on and then to
create their own star constellation with varying sizes of stars, project is
emphasized on line quality. Then they will place a high line quality drawing
of the constellation on top of their reproduced constellation (ex. Show Orions
constellation then the artwork of Orions figure on top of it). Constellations
can be anything the student can imagine like human, animal, fantasy creature,
or invented being. Finally, students will write a small paragraph on the

(Include any modifications)

Then, if students do not understand verbal demonstration, a visual will be

given. Teacher will draw a variety of invented stars, then redraw the same
stars on the second half of the paper only this time the teacher will complete a
line drawing on the invented stars. This includes more visuals and inspiration
from powerpoint, by showing steps and pictures of the project completed by
past students. This allows the teacher easy access to examples and
explanations of the project and provides multi-locational access. Students will
then be allowed to commence on the project and all those that still struggle
with comprehension will be assisted until successful. Make sure to cover that
these will be two SEPARATE drawings on the same paper, one of the star
constellation (skeleton) and one of the constellation and line art (skeleton and
meat).

5-10
minutes

Students will be asked to show research and sketches of thoughts and ideas.
All student plans must be approved by teacher and show knowledge of Greek
Mythology and style of constellation line art. Students will begin using pencil
and paper on sketch paper. Teacher will assist those students with artists
block and attempt to inspire students to form their own ideas. Teacher will do
this by showing students several images and some websites that help to create
constellations such as constellation creator on scratch.mit.edu.

15
minutes

Once sketches are approved, students will be given 12x15 inch paper to
commence tight drawings of their constellations with pencil and once drawn
to both students and teachers satisfaction, they may be inked over with pen
to avoid smudging of the project. Students should show their ability to
produce a quality line drawing and be able to mimic the style of ancient Greek
constellation artwork. Students should ask not only teacher but also peers for
opinion on artwork. Students will use computers to tighten and clean ink
drawings if drawings become damaged. This is to ensure that the final product
has high craftsmanship as well as allow students to edit the image in layers
without fear of ruining the layer beneath it.

35
minutes

Teacher will warn students around 10 minutes before the class ends to begin
listen and clean up. Teacher will then remind students to place in-progress
work in their individual cubbies or drawers. Names should be on the back of
the project in the bottom left corner, to make it easy for the teacher to pull up
the corner to see the students name. Students will be encouraged to do more
research on the line art of Greek constellations for improvement on their
projects as well as recap on their freshmen English course in order to write a
proper Greek history for their constellation. The student will creatively
write no less than a 10 sentence paragraph on the tale behind their
constellation. Ask students what elements of art are used in this assignment as
well as quiz them on how it was used in each of their pieces. Once the class is
clean, students will wait at their tables until the bell rings for them to leave.

10-15
minutes

Projects will be assessed by quality and variety of line, originality and creativity of artwork,
and craftsmanship.
Quality and variety of line 30%
Originality/creativity 30%
Craftsmanship 20%
Quality of creative writing in respect to constellation 20%
