The Collapse of the

Soviet Union

Russian Civil War
• This is a civil war between the Bolsheviks and the nonBolsheviks. The Bolsheviks were the red army and the
communists. The non- Bolsheviks were the white army.
The red army one which created the USSR.

Creation of the Politburo
• The Bolsheviks created this to make sure there was a
strong and continuous leadership for the communists
during the revolution.

Stalin’s Five Year Plan
• Series of economic plans that would bring the USSR to
an industrialized stage over the course of a couple
years. Increased the economy a lot but showed how
communism would take control of every aspect of the
countries people and government.

World War 2
• A Global war that had over 30 countries in it and had
the allies and the axis fighting against each other. The
USSR helped take down the Germans and helped the
allies win the war.

Joe 1
• This was a Russian project for the testing of their first
nuclear weapon. The USA named this Joe 1 because
Joseph Stalin. IT was set off August 29, 1949 at 7 in the
morning. When the USA found out they told the rest of
the world and that hurt Russia because the test was not
secret anymore.

Hydrogen Bomb
• The hydrogen bomb is a nuclear weapon that when
released it had the same reaction as 20,000 tons of TNT.
Only 2 nuclear bombs have ever been set off in history
and they were both by the USA.

Warsaw Pact
• Was a USSR military reaction to Germany joining NATO.
Was motivated by soviets wanting to have military
forces in Europe.

• First artificial earth orbiting satellite. Russia launched it
in October 4, 1957.

Laika and Sputnik 2
• Laika was the first dog to go into space. Also the first
dog to orbit the earth.
• Sputnik 2 was the second spacecraft to be launched into
space. Launched November 3, 1957. Was carrying

Creation of the Berlin Wall
• The Berlin wall was a wall that separated East Germany
from west Berlin and west Germany. Was built on August
13, 1961.

1968 Invasion of Czechoslovakia
• The USSR invaded Czechoslovakia in 1968 to stop
reforms taking place. They successfully halted reform
but it caused unease in the communist countries.

• Salt stands for Strategic Arms Limitation Talks. SALT
limited the number of missile launchers and added the
use of submarine missile launchers. Intercontinental
missile launchers were dismantled also.

• Same thing as SALT 1. The USA and USSR talked and
made treaties.

Soviet- Afghan War
• Lasted over 9 years
• Fought between soviet led afghan forces and
multinational insurgent groups called the Mujahideen.
This group was composed of two alliances the Peshawar
seven and the Tehran eight.

Gorbachev becomes leader
• He was the last leader of the USSR. He was the General
secretary of the communist party. He was the only
General secretary that was born after the October

Chernobyl Disaster
• Was a nuclear accident that occurred in a nuclear power
plant in the Ukraine. An explosion and fire occurred
releasing radioactive materials over much of the USSR
and Europe. This occurred on April 26 1986. This was
the worst nuclear accident that ever occurred.

• Political movement for reform in the communist party.
Occurred in the USSR in the 1980’s.

Lithuania and Latvia Protests
• Thousands of Lithuanians and Latvians formed human
chains along the coast of the Baltic sea. They were
protesting pollution in a new found environmental

Fall of the Berlin Wall
• In 1989 the east and west of Germany began to change
their relations and tore down the wall that separated

• Gorbachev changed the government and made it more
open. He essentially democratized the government.

Gorbachev steps down
• Gorbachev announces he is stepping down as president
of the USSR. Four days earlier 11 soviet republics
announced themselves as independent states.
