Dystopian Review

Essential Question:
What are specific elements and patterns that help us identify and write
dystopian literature?
Objective:
Students will be able to recognize and distinguish dystopian literature and
the elements that its composed of.
CCSS ELA-LITERATURE: RL.8.9:
Analyze how a modern work of fiction draws on themes, patterns of events,
or character types from myths, traditional stories, or religious works such as
the Bible, including describing how the material is rendered new.
Materials Needed:
Cornell notes
Scrap piece of paper
Writing utensils
Prezi
Activity:
TEACHER
1. Take attendance
2. Pass out Cornell notes
while telling students to
get out a scrap piece of
paper and a writing

SmartBoard and start
going through the

students write important
details (that will be told
to them/be told what to
write) on their Cornell
notes. Prompt students
to discuss what the
books and movies on
the examples have to do
with dystopian societies.
4. At the end of the Prezi,
have students write two
things on their scrap
paper and turn into as
an exit slip: 1) Name
one specific reason that
the book you just
finished reading is
dystopian and 2) Think
of one thing you would
write about in a

Dystopian Review

Exit slip of two questions: 1) Name one specific reason that the book you just
finished is dystopian and 2) Think of one thing you would write about in a
dystopian story.
Accommodations:
Bob: I would make sure that nothing in the presentation specifically regards
family life, but when it hints at it make sure to say another example to avoid
him shutting down.
Sally: Move in a slow, yet efficient, manner throughout the Prezi to ensure
that she is getting the important information down. I will also make sure to
repeat what I want students to write down instead of having them all scurry
to write everything on the board down. This will help them to condense and
get what they actually need.
