Former Survivor candidate writes remarkable book
“Everything is possible if you really want”
Four years ago she was one of the trendsetters in European Survivor. Today Esther Jacobs (39) presents
a special book: What Is Your Excuse?
“It is a book about the excuses that people have not to follow their dreams. These dreams can range from an
old hobby to travelling the world,” says Esther. “I want to show people that everything is possible, but only if
you really want to. I stress however that this book is no guide. I make mistakes myself sometimes. But based
on my own life experiences I hope to inspire people so they can see what they can change in their own lives.
For example the “I have no money” excuse is easy to solve. For the amount that people pay for their two
week summer holidays, I can travel for two months in South America. Do you have children? Take them for a
safari to South Africa. Thanks to the exchange rate this trip could still be within your budget.
But isn’t it easy to talk like that for Jacobs? She has no relationship, kids or permanent job.
“That is true, but people are more independent than they think. Suppose you dream of starting your own
business, but don’t do it, because you think you are dependent on your job. You could start by following
courses after work. Once you start earning money, you can reduce the amount of time you spend in your
regular job. People think that it would be a huge effort to change your life, I say that you can best start with
small steps “. But do all dreams have to be realized? “No, but it is important to think about it. Many people
continue on auto-pilot and don’t even realize that they are quite happy with what they have. And wouldn’t it
be a shame if on your deathbed you think, ‘Wish I had…’. If you think this could be you, you better do
something now. ”
The audience still knows Esther from European Survivor. Was participation in the reality show one of
her dreams?
“Not quite. I did always dream of being on a deserted island, but the mind games played on the show
interested me less. I had entered on a whim because I wanted to be away from the world around me.
Normally I say that this is not a good strategy. You have to choose something to move towards, rather than to
run away from something, but the good thing is, it brought me new adventures. And Marnix, who later won

the show, has become a good friend of mine. “What does Esther herself still dream of? “I do not look too far
ahead. I have always put a lot of energy towards attaining a goal, often against the current. I have now
discovered that a ‘go with the flow’ mentality can bring the same results, but with less effort. I do not know
where the next current will bring me, but it feels good like this “.
In the Netherlands there are already 2500 copies of the book sold.
“I get many responses. People tell me they are happy with what they have, but needed the book to realize
that. Others get inspired to follow their dreams. Like a mother and housewife who for years dreamed of a
theater career and now finally took steps to make her dream a reality. That is very nice to hear “.
