ST ATHANASIOS
OF
Christ
ALEXANDRIA
St Athanasios the Great of Alexandria, was a distinguished Holy Church Father and
a Pillar of Orthodoxy.
He was born circa 297 in the great city of Alexandria, into a family of pious
Christians.
He received a fine secular education, but he acquired more Knowledge by diligent
study of Holy Scripture.
In his early childhood, the future Hierarch, St Athanasios, became known to St
Alexander, the Patriarch of Alexandria, after he had watched from his window,
a group of children, which included St Athanasios, playing along the seashore.
The Christian children had decided to Baptize their pagan playmates and the
young St Athanasios who had been designated as their Bishop, performed the
Holy Mystery of Baptism, precisely by repeating the words he had heard so
often in church during this Holy Service.
Patriarch Alexander observed the entire performance from his window, and then
he requested that the children and their parents be brought to him.
St Alexander conversed with all the children for a long while, and determined that
the Baptism performed by young Athanasios had indeed been conducted
precisely according to the Church Order, after which he acknowledged the
Baptism as being authentic, and Sealed it with the Holy Mystery of Chrismation.
From that moment, St Alexander supervised the Spiritual Education of St Athanasios,
and in due time he accepted him into the Clergy - first as a Reader, and then
ordained as a Deacon.
As Deacon, St Athanasios accompanied Patriarch Alexander to the First Ecumenical
Council at Nicea in 325, and there St Athanasios refuted the heresy of Arius.
His wise and intelligent speech met with the approval of the Orthodox Fathers of the
Council, but the Arians - those who were openly and those who were secretly
heretics hated St Athanasios and persecuted him for the rest of his life.
After the Repose of St Alexander, St Athanasios was unanimously elected as his
successor to the See of Alexandria, but he refused - accounting himself as being
totally unworthy.
Eventually, however, at the insistence of all the Orthodox Faithful who were in
agreement concerning his worthiness, St Athanasios was consecrated and
enthroned as Archbishop of Alexandria at the early age of twenty-eight.
St Athanasios guided the Holy Church of Christ and Her Holy Flock for forty-seven
years, during which he endured much persecution and grief from his
antagonists.
Several times the heretical Arians managed to expel him from Alexandria, forcing
him to hide in desolate places in order to save himself from their numerous
attempts to assassinate him.
Consequently, St Athanasios spent more than twenty years in exile, repeatedly
returning to his Holy Flock and being banished again and again.
There was a time when he was the only Faithful and True Orthodox Bishop in
Diocese for all the others had apostasised by falling into heresy.
At the false councils of the Arian Bishops, St Athanasios was deposed, yet depite
their continuous persecution, he continued to defend and protect the Purity and
Divine Truth of the Orthodox Faith.

HYMNS- ST ATHA
HEBREWS 13 : 7 - 16
Brethren:
remember those who rule
over you - those who spoke to you
the Word of God.
Consider the outcome of their Lives, and
imitate their Faith.
Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and
today and forever.
Do not be led away by diverse and
strange teachings.
It is Good that the heart be Strengthened
by Grace not by foods, which have
not benefitted their adherents.
We have an Altar - from which those
who serve the Tabernacle have no
right to eat.
The bodies of those animals, whose
blood is brought into the Sanctuary
by the High Priest as a Sacrifice for
sin are burnt outside the Camp.
Jesus also suffered in order to Sanctify
the People through His own Blood,
outside the gate.
Therefore, let us go forth to Him outside
the Camp, to bear the abuse He
endured.
Here we have no Lasting City, but we
seek that which is to come.
Through Him then, let us continually
offer up a Sacrifice of Praise to God
that is: the Fruit of lips that
Confessed His Name.
Share what you have - do not neglect to
do Good.
Such Sacrifices are pleasing to God.
TO
ST MATTHEW 5 : 14 - 19
Our
St Athanasios wrote countless letters and tracts against the Arian heresy, so when
Emperor Julian the Apostate began his persecution of Christians, his obsessive
wrath initially focused upon the Holy Archbishop whom everyone
acknowledged and respected as being a Great Pillar of Orthodoxy.
Emperor Julian the Apostate intended to kill St Athanasios in order to strike
Christianity a grievous blow. However, before he managed to achieve his
wicked machinations, he himself perished after being mortally wounded by an
arrow during a battle. Just before he took his last breath, the Christ-hating
Julian was heard to cry out aloud in utter despair: Thou hast conquered, O
Galilean!!
In the relative peaceful aftermath of Emperor Julian the Apostates death, St
Athanasios guided the Alexandrian Church for another seven years.
In 373, St Athanasios Reposed peacefully in Christ at the age of seventy-six.
Numerous of the Inspired and profound works of St Athanasios of Alexandria have
been preserved.
There are four Orations against the Arian heresy, an Epistle to Epictetos, Bishop of
the Church of Corinth, On the Divine and Human Natues in Jesus Christ, and
four Epistles to Serapion, Bishop of Thmuis, concerning God the Holy Spirit and
His Equality with God the Father and God the Son, which was directed against
the heresy of Macedonios.
Other Apologetic Works in defence of Orthodoxy have been preserved, among
which is the Letter to Emperor Constantios.
St Athanasios wrote Commentaries on Holy Scripture, and books of moral and
didactic character.
St Athanasios, having known St Anthony the Great better than anyone else, had
written his excellent Biography, which St John Chrysostom advised every
Orthodox Christian every serious Disciple of Christ to read and to
contemplate.
St Athanasios is jointely Commemorated with St Cyril of Alexandria on 18 January.
May his memory be Eternal and may St Athanasios ceaselessly guide us and
Intercede with Christ for the Salvation of our immortal soul.
