Reflection

In addition to the remediation itself, you will also write a relatively short (700-1000 word) reflection in
which you describe what effect your remediation had on the meaning of the text--.

My genealogy was based on how important sampling and remixes are to hip hop. I
showed examples of just that by highlighting artist such as Run DMC, and Missy Elliot who
used other musicians to inspire some of their greatest work. Throughout this course we have
discussed Copy, Transform, and Combine. This doesnt just work in literature but throughout all
concepts in the world. I understand the end and outs of hip hop because I am a true fan. A beyond
dedicated fan, because it has helped me get through many obstacles throughout life. Bolter and
Grusin defines remediation as the representation of one medium in another. I decided to make
my remediation to an ode to hip hop. A poem, to hip hop. Personifying it, and giving it
characteristics of a human. Because to some people, hip hop is way more than just a type of
music. They literally live, breathe, and sleep hip hop. I am one of those people that have an
emotional connection to the music. Some grow up listening to all the stories that the artist
wanted to share with them and it helps them get through similar experiences that occur in their
life. My audience is those exact people, it could be any age group, gender, or race. None of that
really matters, the only thing that matters is having the true love, and respect for hip hop. And
thats something you can begin to love at five, or maybe thirteen or even start thirty it all depends
on when you have that experience where it all connects.
I still remember my exact connection moment, although Im not quite sure how old I was. I
was riding in the back seat of my parents car. When Skys The Limit by Biggie Smalls feat 112
came on, and for some reason everything about the song spoke to me. The inspirational words,
spoken by the legendary Notorious B.I.G himself, which than I knew nothing about. The soft

beat playing in the background as well as the melodies that 112 sang so well. I began analyzing
hip hop from then on. From that day forward, I was fascinated with amazing hip hop music and
my life would never be the same. I did my research on the old school classics hip hop, to the
current artist that hold the thrown. I watched countless documentaries on my favorite artist trying
to get more of an understanding behind what inspires there music. It was way deeper than just
rap to me.
My remediation gained the emotional aspect of my paper. How I felt inside, nothing to do
with research or why sampling is important to genre itself. But how everything about the genre is
important to me, and when I say me. I mean all true hip hop fans that I know feel the same way
as me. My paper was just the facts that go along with hip hop because sampling is a very
important aspect and without it there would be no hip hop. But my remediation shows the
appreciation for all the hip hop is. It speaks almost as if hip hop is fading away, because its
under appreciated. And has been changed and altered to how others believe that it should be. So
it losses the factual aspect of the paper. Its a different voice speaking, same person different
voice. The essay/ genealogy is more of the formal aspect. Could be compared to going to work,
dressed very professional. You know how you have to behave at work. Versus the reflection
being more casual, like being at home hanging out with a couple friends. The Truth comes out.
My remediation is a creative way of expressing my love for hip hop. From reading JohnsonEilola and Selber, we got that assemblage is the process of using existing texts to create new
texts for new contexts. I decided to use a poem as my medium because, usually poems are
correlated with emotions. So I thought it would be a great way to do just that. Of course I could
have taken many different ways to remediate my paper. But creating a poem, was quite a
challenge within itself. Because I wanted to get the passion, and deep feelings throughout my

voice in the poem. I feel as though I was successful with that. Ultimately I was thanking hip hop
for all it has done throughout my life. So there was a deeper messages in scripted within this
assignment.
