4 Principles which Help ELLs Succeed in School
1) Increase Comprehensibility
TPR emphasized comprehension before speaking and required students to listen and
respond physically (through actions or gestures) to the aural information Students listen
and respond physically as teachers acted out the language clues. Such a strategy increased
their aural and vocabulary comprehension and that it was a stimulating change of pace.
2) Increase Interaction
The discussion will help students to have more interaction.
3) Increase Thinking Skills (Blooms Taxonomy of Higher Order Thinking Verbs)
Students have to think about what to write on the red envelope and how to make it looks
great.
4) Increase Connections to Students Lives and Cultures
Have students to recall the Chinese New Year celebrations they knew at school or
anywhere in the United States, so they can make connection between this holiday to their
culture and lives.
