It looks after economy , safety and smoother process control. But

insufficient or poor insulation can be tremendous of loss of energy . So
thermal Insulation is often defined as, A major tool in improv ing energy
av ailability .

Basic objectiv e is to retard flow of heat:

From a hot surface to cold env ironment

From an warm env ironment to cold surface

Economic reasons for Thermal Insulation in Industry Insulation:

Reduces fuel consumption, and hence ov erall operational cost so day to day economy benefits.
Reduces capacity requirements for heating/cooling sy stems (boiler, refrigeration unit etc)
Sav ings in Capital costs

The basic criterion for thermal insulation is Economics. Howev er, this is not the sole criterion.
Process Control reasons for thermal Insulation:

Reduces temp. drop of fluid in heated sy stem

Reduces temperature gain of fluid in refrigerated sy stem.

Reduces boil off rate in v olatile liquid storage sy stem
Assist in maintaining thermal balance in reaction sy stem
In heated sy stem, lowers temp. of ex posed surfaces-protects workmen from burn hazard
Prov ides fire protection for plant, equipment & piping
Reduces capacity requirements for heating/cooling sy stems (boiler, refrigeration unit etc)

T y pes of Insulation:

1 . Mass ty pe insulation: Based on interposing a mass of material with a built in capacity to retard heat flow
2. Reflectiv e Insulation: Based on prov iding a series of reflectiv e surface with the interv ening space s ev acuated
3. Microporous Insulation:Based on a combination of Mass & Reflectiv e technologies.

Phy sical properties OF T HERMAL INSULAT ING MAT ERIALS:

Significant phy sical parameters of thermal insulating materials can be div ided into,

Thermal Properties
Chemical Properties
Commercial Factors

T herm al Properties: Important thermal parameters of thermal insulation materials are

Temperature resistance
Thermal conductiv ity
Thermal diffusiv ity , and

Points to consider in selecting m aterials:

Alkalinity (pH) or acidity

Chemical Reactiv ity / passiv ity
Coefficient of Ex pansion / Contraction
Compressiv e Strength & Breaking Load
Abrasion Resistance
Combustibility
Most importantly , THERMAL CONDUCTIV ITY

Foam glass
Phenolic Foam

Among the listed materials, Poly urethane and Poly isocy anurate hav e assumed the highest importance because of the many
superiorities they possess.
As is well known, these materials can be applied as Preformed shapes or installed in-situ-by Pouring or by spray .
Insulation Finishes: The outer cov er of insulation.

Weather barriers-claddings
Weather cum v apour retarder, Indoor cov erings and finishes

These all hav e one basic function -to protect insulation from the ex ternal ex posure media.
Insulation Sy stem Design:
Insulation sy stem should perform to the ex pected lev el, undiminished ov er its life.

This needs full data on material behav iour under all conditions of ex posure.
In particular, we need to know what would make a material lose its properties.

Thermal calculations need representativ e v alue of Thermal Conductiv ity for design

Standard materials like Rockwool and Calcium Silicate hav e well established Design k v alues.
Limiting Serv ice Temperature of use
In pipe applications, weight becomes critical. Abrasion is also a major problem with some materials.
