Objectives:
1.(Domain1:Artisticperception)Inthisprojectthestudentswillmakeasocio
politicalphotocollageaboutasocietal/politicalproblem.Thestudentsshouldchoose
somethingthathasmeaningtothemortheyarepassionateabout.Thestudentscanuse
formandspacetomakeatwodimensionalappearanceintheircollagebyusingcertain
photographictechniques.Incollagesthelinescanbeseenaroundtheedgesofcollaged
materials,ifthelinesareanintendedpartoftheirartworktheycanleavethemin;butif
theyarenotaplannedpartoftheirartworkthentheyneedtocleanupthevisiblelines.
Theycanuseanymaterialstheyseefittocoveruporhidethelinesinthecollagebut
thereshouldstillbeanemphasisonphotography;forexampletheycannotusealotof
paintandonetinylittlephotointheirphotocollage.Thecollageneedstobearrangedin
suchawaythatithasathoughtprovokingcomposition,anditalsoshouldcreatea
conversationaboutthetopic.Thestudentswillneedtofigureouthowtoapplypracticed
artstandardsincreatingtheirphotocollage;suchasform,light,line,shading,space,
textures,shapes,andpatterns.Thestudentscancreatelayersintheircollageiftheywant
butitsnotarequirement,studentscanusephotocollagetechniquestoeliminatelayers.
Photocollagetechniquescanalsobeappliedtoeliminatetexturesintheircollageifthey
choose,buttheycankeeptexturesintheircollageiftheywant.Theycancreatetextures
byaddingvariousmaterials,andbylayeringthematerials.

2.(Domain2:CreativeExpression)Photographiccollagetechniqueswillbe
taughttotheclassandthestudentswillneedtoexploreadditionalcollageideasoutside
ofclass.Theywillhavetoresearchsociopoliticaltopicsinordertofindasubjectthat
theyarepassionateabout;itmighthelpthemtoalsoresearchadditionalcollagemethods.
Studentswillnotuseunsanitaryitems,vulgar,and/orobscenematerialsinthecreationof
theirsociopoliticalphotocollage,unlessitpertainstothesociopoliticalissuetheyare
focusingon.However,iftheychoosetouseunsanitaryitemsinthecollagetheywill
needtotakeaphotoofthefinishedpiecetodisplaytotheclass,unsanitaryitemswillnot
beallowedatschoolforobviousreasons.Thefinishedsociopoliticalcollagewill
representthemandtheirbeliefs.Thecollageitselfshouldbesomethingtheywantto
changeeitherintheircommunityoranywhereintheworld.Whateverthetopicisthey
shouldhaveconfidenceintheirviewsandbeproudofthemselves,forbeingbrave
enoughtospeakoutagainstsomethingtheybelieveiswrong.
3.(Domain3:HistoricalandCulturalContextoftheVisualArts)Theclasswill
betaughtaboutthehistoryofsociopoliticalphotographyandthechangesthatcame
aboutfromtheworkofspecificphotographers.Thestudentswillunderstandthe
importanceofsociopoliticalartoncetheyvelearnedabouttheimpactofworksby
DorotheaLange,LewisHine,andJacobRiis.Thestudentscancreateaworkthatis
basedoffofexistinghistoricalsociopoliticalartworks,ortheycancreateonethatis
solelytheirownandbasedonlyonculturalcontexts.Additionallythestudentswill
examinecollagepracticesinearlyphotographyandearlyphotographicmethods,
particularlyintheworkofJerryUelsmann.Ifthestudentsneedadditionalcollageartist

referencestheycanlookatBraqueandPicasso.
4.(Domain4:AestheticValuing)UnlikeothertypesofartSociopolitical
thrivesonshockingpeopleandnotbeingbeautiful.Eventhoughthistypeofartisnt
alwaysbeautifulitcanstillbeaestheticallypleasingtotheeyeifstandardartisticcanons
arefollowed.Sociopoliticalartresonateswithpeoplesemotionsbyshowingthem
imagesthataremeanttoprovokeaspecificemotionalreactionfromtheviewer.The
imagesinthisspecificartmovementaregenerallyimagesthatalmosteveryonecanrelate
to.Whenthestudentsaremakingtheirphotocollagetheywillneedtothinkaboutwhat
kindofemotionstheywanttoprovokeintheobserver.Thestudentswilladdcertain
imagerytotheircollagetocreateaspecificaesthetic,whichwillportrayastory;the
specificstorywillbeintensifiedbytheemotionsattachedtoit.Thestudentscancreatea
workthatisaworldwideissueoranissuethatonlypertainstoasmallpartoftheworld.
5.(Domain5:Connections,Relationships,andApplication)Thestudentswill
researchtheconnectionsbetweenthechangesintheworldandartthathadcomeout
aroundthesametime.Theapplicationofsociopoliticalartwillneedtobeexploredby
thestudentsandtheywillneedtoapplytheirknowledgetotheirartwork.Thestudents
willseetherelationshipssociopoliticalarttotheworldandhowsociopoliticalartrules
theworld.Itiseverywhereandithasbeenapartofsocietiessinceancienttimes,they
canseeconnectthisformofarttomanyoftheirschoolsubjects.Thetruthbeneathabout
howmanythingsweredevelopedliesjustbeneaththesurface.Itjustneedstobesought
after.

9.Thestudentswillintroducetheirpiecetotheclassandgiveabriefbioofit.Theywill
answeranyquestionstheotherstudentshaveaboutitorthetopicitisabout.
10.Theotherstudentswillalsocritiquethesuccessofeachstudentswork,andif
anythingneedstobedonetomakeitmoresuccessful.Thepupilswillalsodiscusswhetherthe
messagehadcomeacrossorifitgotlostinthework.Eachstudentwillalsodiscussthecultural
andsocialcontextsthathaveinfluencedhimorher,andhowitpertainstothechangetheywant
toseeintheworld.

are un-aware of
the issue of tar
sands oil then it
might not be clear.

Iampassionateaboutsociopoliticalartworkandthechangesthatoccursfromtheissues
theyrepresent.TheKeystoneXLpipelineisapipelinethatwillcarrytarsandsoilacrossthe
UnitedStates,andthesetypesofpipeshavethereputationofbursting.TheKeystonewillrun
throughthelargestaquiferintheUnitedStates,andifitburstsitwillcontaminatethebiggest
sourceofwaterinAmerica.TheKeystoneXLpipelineisanissueImpassionateabout,andI
fearforourcountryifitgoesthrough.IdidmyworkbecauseIwanttoaddtothevoicesof
peoplewhocontinuetoprotestthebuildingoftheKeystone.
