EMBRACE RELATIONSHIPS & DISABILITIES IN SOCIETY THIS IS THE FINAL OUTCOME OF MY PROJECT ENTITLED “RELATIONSHIPS: DISABILITES - FILLING THE GAP’. WHEN YOU SEE THE PAINTING, WHAT IS THE FIRST THING YOU NOTICE? DO YOU IMMEDIATELY SEE LOVE OR IS HER ARM THE MOST PROMINENT FEATURE? THIS DUALITY QUESTIONS HOW WE PERCEIVE DISABILTIES IN SOCIETY AND WHETHER, IT IS REALLY NECESSARY TO EMPHASIZE SUCH INCAPABILITY WHEN THEIR IMPAIREMENT IS OFTEN WHAT MAKES THEM STRONGER PEOPLE WORK IN PROGRESS — ISABELLA (LEFT) AND LOURAINE BY ISABELLA GARCIA FOSTER ALISON LAPPER WAS MY MAIN ARTIST REFERENCE SINCE SHE IS A KEY ROLE MODEL WHO SHOWS HOW MUCH SHE WAS ABLE TO ACHIEVE DESPITE BEING BORN WITH NO ARMS AND PART OF HER LEGS. A STATUE OF HER, MADE BY MARC QUINN, FEATURED ON THE FOURTH PLINTH IN TRAFALGAR SQUARE IN 2005. THIS RAISED AWARENESS AND ELEVATED THE STATUS OF DISABLED PEOPLE BY MONUMENTALISING HER FIGURE. THE VENUS DE MILO IS A WORLD RENOWNED STATUE BUT NO ONE CALLS HER STATUE ‘DISABLED’ AS HER BEAUTY SURPASSES THE ABSENCE OF HER ARMS. THIS PAINTING IS A MONUMENT TO A MOTHER’S LOVE FOR HER CHILD AND THE WAY IN WHICH MY MOTHER EMBRACES HER DISABILITY. LOVE CAN NEVER BE DISABLED.
