Introduction and Organizational Background


Philanthropic organizations focus on the religion, social work, human welfare, education and
medicine, further a philanthropic organization represents the moral element of a society
(Burlingame, 2004). Emirates foundation is also a philanthropic organization which is backed by
the government of Abu Dhabi to work for the welfare of the people living in UAE. To better
shape the moral element of the society the emirates foundation is running several programs.

The Project
The purpose of this project is to provide a detailed insight into the Emirates Foundation for
Youth Development. The different programs of the Foundation and the strategies used to
implement them would be discussed in detail. Moreover, similar programs from the GCC
countries will also be studied in order to find the similarities and differences between them.

Methodology
In order to provide an insight into the Emirates Foundation for Youth Development and to
understand the various programs and the strategies, a combination of interviews and online
resources were used. Conducting interviews with the office of the Chief Programs Officer helped
in getting firsthand account about the programs and the various strategies that are implemented
to run these programs. The Media Center of the Emirates Foundation for Youth Development
was also a valuable resource for information gathering. Press releases, newsletters and speeches
by the members of the management were also used.

Overview
Emirates foundation was established in 2005 and since its establishment as per the statistics
provided on the website the foundation has helped 28,000 young people to make positive
contributions in their communities with the help of programs offered by emirates foundation
(Emirates Foundation, n.d.). The Emirates Foundation is involved in recognizing the need for
change and then launching programs for the development of youth in UAE. The foundations
long term goals involve shaping the future of UAE for long term progress and sustainability of
the nation. The objective of Emirates Foundation is to stay in tuned with the latest developments

in philanthropy and promote the social and cultural values of UAE to raise the profile of the
young people and the nation as a whole.

Vision
We work to inspire, educate and guide young people in the UAE to ensure a sustainable future
for the country (Emirates Foundation, n.d.).

Mission & Goals


We work in partnership with public and private sector through venture philanthropy in the lives
of young people has a positive and lasting impact by:
Identify, train and learn about the challenges faced by young UAE.
The development of sustainable solutions based Social Enterprise.
Encourage your young UAE participate voluntarily, and society (Emirates
Foundation, n.d.).

Organizational structure
Organizational structure of an organization defines the structural dimensions of an organization
like formalization, centralization, specialization, complexity and hierarchy of authority (Nelson
& Quick, 2008). The hierarchy of Emirates Foundation is shown below defining the structure of
the organization.

Minister of Foreign Affairs, HH Sheikh Abdullah Bin Zayed Al Nahyan is the Chairman of
Emirates Foundation, the company also has a highly qualified and experienced senior
management. The board members of emirates organization are also influential nationals of UAE
making the foundation politically stronger. The partners of emirates foundation includes many of
the renowned firms in UAE which are aabar, ADCB, ADAC, Abudhabi Chamber of Commerce
and Industry and others list provided on the company website.
The formal structure of any organization represents how different positions and jobs or duties
have been distributed among the departments or employees of the organization (French, Rayner,
Rees, & Rumbles, 2011). The structure of emirates foundation shows that there are no rigid
levels in the organization and its very easy for the youth to approach the senior management of
the foundation. Infact the board of directors and the senior management all are working in
collaboration with the nationals of UAE for the development of the whole nation.

Organizational environment
Emirates foundation has a decentralized decision making environment where everyone
contributes in the process of decision making as an integral part of the organization. Emirates
Foundation invites nonprofit environmental organizations with a proposed extension of an
existing project and starts a new program, and / or improves their current organization.
The objective of this project is the presence and the role of nonprofits to improve the
environment in the UAE to tackle finance projects aimed at strengthening the country's capacity
to solve problems and enhance the environment.

Programs of the foundation


The Emirates Foundation has launched different projects including project for environmental
practices exposing the young UAE nationals to study in various disciplines of environmental
science, generating career opportunities in the field of the environment in the UAE. The project
aims to identify candidates and enthusiastic partners with environmental organizations.

Takatof
Overview
The Emirates Foundation is committed to promote volunteering in UAE culture and to make
volunteering as the way of life. Takatof is designed specially designed by the crown prince of
Abu Dhabi to encourage the youth and the people of UAE to volunteer.
Strategy
The strategy is to apply Takatof to every sector of the economy by introducing projects like
Takatof Halth Sector Projects, Takatof Special Needs Projects, Takatof Ramadhan Project,
Takatof International Volunteering, Takatof Volunteer Training Programs, Takatof University
Clubs, Takatof Environment Projects, Takatof Makeover Stars Projects and Takatof at Public
Events Projects. By introducing these projects Emirates Foundations is ensuring volunteering in
the community and promotes young people to volunteer in their communities.
Scope of the program
The scope of the program is to promote volunteering in every aspect of the community and at the
same time the foundation adheres to strict integrity and ethics. Consequently the scope of the
program is not just limited to volunteering rather its about making volunteering a part of life of
the nationals in UAE.

Sanid
Overview
This is also a volunteering program launched by emirates foundation which focuses on social and
civic responsibility. The major purpose of the program is to get the volunteers ready for
emergency situations like natural disasters etc.

Strategy
Sanid program provides training for its volunteers enabling the volunteers to be prepared for
response in emergency situations like fire, medical emergency etc. The training also has different
levels ensuring that the volunteers are completely prepared.
Scope of the program
The program operates at the national level and the scope is limited to the people of UAE.

Kafaat
Overview
Kafa'at Emirates Foundation Program (EFKP) is launched by emirates foundation to liberate and
develop talent in the people of UAE. The program is designed to increase the career
opportunities of Emiratis in the private sector by polishing the talents of the nationals of UAE.
Strategy
There are three projects launched under Kafaat to polish the talent of Emiratis Kafaat Youth
Leadership Program, Kafaat Career Counseling (Real Game) and Kafaat Real Step Program .
Scope of the program
The scope of the program is limited to the nationals of UAE.

Think Science
Overview
This program is specially launched for the youth between the ages of 15 to 24 and is focused to
create science related skills in the nationals of UAE. The target is to keep up with the latest
development in science and promoting science related studies in the youth of UAE.
Strategy
The program has a very interactive strategy of running different projects like Think Science
Competition, Think Science Ambassadors and Think Science Connect.

Scope of the program


Scope of the program is limited to the nationals of UAE but there is no limit in exploring the
dimensions of science.

Financial Literacy
Overview
This program is specially launched to help the nationals of UAE to manage their finance
specially debt. The program targets on building saving habits and educating the nationals on how
to manage their finances.
Strategy
There are two projects launched for financial literacy in the nationals of UAE which are Sheikh
Mohammed bin Zayed Higher Education Grant and London School of Economics. Both of these
projects are launched to increase financial literacy in the youth of UAE.
Scope of the program
The scope of the program is limited to UAE only.

Empowerment of youth with disabilities


Overview
This program is launched by Emirates Foundation to increase employment opportunities for the
youth with disabilities.
Strategy
The emirates foundation is continuously working to increase employment opportunities for youth
with disabilities by exploring social enterprise.
Scope of the program
The scope of the program is limited to UAE

Itijah Venture
Overview
Itijah Venture is an international step to create leadership and innovative skills in the youth.

Strategy
The strategy is to invite intellects from all over the world and discuss the latest challenges the
world is facing and then brain storm to come up with innovative ideas.
Scope of the program
The scope of the program is not limited to UAE rather it is a very innovative step inviting all the
intellectuals and industry professionals at one platform.

Comparison with Qatar Charity in GCC Countries


Comparing the programs launched by the Emirates foundation and the Qatar Charity it is been
revealed that Emirates foundation has launched better projects to developed innovative,
volunteering, educational and financial skills in the nationals of UAE. Consequently Emirates
foundation has better programs but programs launched by Qatar Charity in Palestine are
something Emirates foundation should look up to.

Overview
Qatar Charity is also a philanthropic organization focused to help the people of Qatar, specially
women and children (Qatar Charity, n.d.). Qatar Charity is also working directly with initiatives
to educate the people of Qatar at the same time keeping the cultural aspect of Qatar alive.

Effectiveness of the Programs


The Qatar Charity is running three different projects which are Family, women and children
project, education and culture project and relief and emergency response project. The projects
run by Qatar Charity are very effective in terms of international programs run in Palestine and
Pakistan. Qatar Charity is also running very effective income-generating projects.

Recommendations for further development of the


Emirates Foundations programs
Most of the programs launched by the emirates foundation are limited to UAE only except Itijah
Venture and Takatof. The Emirates foundation must explore in other parts of the Muslim world

which urgently require support like Palestine. Initiatives like Takatof, Sanid and Empowerment
of youth with disabilities must be provided to the Muslims in Palestine as well.
Further different programs could be launched for the provision of basic necessities in Palestine
along with education and helping children and women.

Conclusion
Emirates Foundation is a great initiative launched by the government of Abu Dhabi, such
initiatives will certainly open doors for the youth of UAE, and will be a milestone in the
prosperity and development of the whole Nation.
In this project all the programs launched by the Emirates foundation were studied. A combination
of interviews and online resources was used to collect data on all the programs launched by
Emirates Foundation. After the comparison its been concluded that Emirates Foundation is an
organization with an intellectual and innovative senior management and strong partners, it also
has the backing of the government and the support of volunteers, consequently its playing a vital
role in shaping the future of UAE.
