Hydroxyl Definition Style

(Noun) - The univalent group OH, a component of bases, certain acids,
phenols, alcohols, carboxylic, and sulfonic acids.

hydroxyl is a compound made of an

oxygen atom bonded with a
hydrogen atom
hydroxyl radicals are the neutral
form of the hydroxyl ion
radical = HO
ion = HO hydroxyl radicals are highly
reactive
these radicals when free can harm
DNA, lipids, and proteins

l)

metal hydroxide is
formed when a
hydroxyl group is
joined to a metal

alcohols form when a hydroxyl

group is joined by a single bond to
an alkyl group or aryl group.
An aryl group is a group that
functions even though it is missing
an aromatic ring(hydrocarbons
which contain benzene)
An alkyl group is a fragment of an
alkane that loses a hydrogen atom

Organic Molecule: DNA

Sugar and alcohol are both

all carbon based and have a pair
of atoms known as the hydroxyl

History Behind Hydroxyl

Alcohol has been around for thousands of years, but
we are still not sure what the exact date was of when it
was formed. The earliest alcoholic beverages were
made from honey or berries (and of course hydroxyl).
Hydroxyl also has a purpose in many other
compounds. Water itself even contains hydroxyl
groups that can form hydrogen bonds. Even alcohol is
added in perfume or sweeteners. Although, let us get
back to the history of hydroxyl. One last historical fact
about hydroxyl/ alcohol is that the substance was
invented by Muhammad Zakariya. This was the first
type of alcohol discovered (today known as ethyl
alcohol).
