Professor Hughes
Reflective essay
My essay on The question of whether we are too dependent on computers is a
complicated with ideological and value laden positions with the opposing sides illustrating
different strands of their argument. This essay topic was written with the research topic in mind
about developing an effective research process with search strategies and evaluation of my
source material bearing in mind the use of the authors. I am able to write a mediation about such
a topic because of my knowledge acquired in metacognition and synthesizing the points of both
sides of the argument with the other side of it evidenced by Lisa Guernsey an education
journalist who wondered how television and computers were influencing the development of her
two daughters and thus decided to do a research on the negative side of technology. Without my
knowledge in the essay I wouldnt be able to attain this goal.
Kugel Peter, who is a research Associate Professor in the Computer Science Department
at Boston College in his article, presents his opinion on the intelligence of computers and
information systems. The concepts used to present the computer as smart are too primitive
according to the Kugel to ever lead the smart systems.
However, he makes a point that computers are smarter than people in some ways, as in
doing routine work faster and more accurately than people. Furthermore, humans have the ability
to look at a situation in a larger context and plan ahead of it. This presents the advantages of
technology. However during the course of the class I am able to understand and better apply the
in reading and comprehension as well as narrating the writers information in a more and precise
manner without losing the main idea of the writer. Also, I am able to improve on my writing and
polish up my writing skills as I am now able to differentiate the different types of writing skills
and I am able to know who I am
allows technology to define our every aspect of life as further emphasized that Nearly any home
surface could become touchscreen, providing fingertip control of home electronics.(Chris
&Kristin)
From this whether we are too dependent on computers goes a long way to express these
skills in narrative and metacognition as can be illustrated in the various paragraphs as we can see
the views of the author expressed. In this we can say than with the coming of technology humans
are too dependent on then and will use their minds to think only if there is no technology
available around them. At the end of the class I feel very satisfied with what I achieved looking
