Let be an optical fiber designed with a triangular index profile such as the one illustrated in
the last page of this document.
We define the following parameters :
n1 : maximal value of the refractive index in the fiber core
n2 : maximal value of the refractive index in the optical fiber cladding
n=n1-n2 is the maximal refractive index difference between the core and the optical cladding.
a: the fiber core radius.
r is the is the radial position of the input optical ray on the input face of the optical fiber.
0 is the input angle of the optical ray in the air
1 is the angle of the optical ray inside the core
We are interested in studying the propagation of an optical ray in this fiber. We assume that
this propagation takes place in the xOz plane.

1. Establish the expression of the index profile n(r) in the fiber core.
2. Calculate the value of the numerical aperture of this fiber. What information is
available from this value?
An incoming optical ray is injected in the optical core at the position where r=0 (on
the fiber axis).
3. Determine the rmax position of the light ray in the fiber in the three following case :
a. 0 =10 ;
b. 0 =15 ;
c. 0 =20 ;
4. Give a simple but as correct as possible representation of the rays trajectories for these
3 angles 0.
