PROGRAM NOTES

A modern concert band arrangement of Handels Water Music seems a most-appropriate scoring,
given that his first orchestration was heavy on the winds due to its outdoor performance on a
Thames barge. Highlighting three movements from the original suites (HWV 348, HWV 349, and
HWV 350) that are appropriate for this level, younger players are now able to experience firsthand representative excerpts from what has been hailed as Handels most famous and most often
performed instrumental work.

NOTES TO THE CONDUCTOR

lU

eg

P
L

The music is set in B b major throughout, with no accidentals for players to deal with. Also, all notes
are tongued. The three movements are to be played continuously, with a brief break providing
a moment to regroup before changing tempo and meter. Each section is a bit quicker in tempo
than the preceding one. The middle movement is marked with tacet for both the Percussion 1 and
Percussion 2 parts, which may warrant some instruction if that is an unfamiliar term.
Best wishes for a musical experience with this cherished repertoire.

Please note: Our band and orchestra music is now being collated by an automatic high-speed system.
The enclosed parts are now sorted by page count, rather than score order.
