Genre What makes it?
• What is Genre? • Genre is a ‘Type’ it defines what a film will be about such as Horror, Action, Comedy. • Film directors use the word genre to draw in the public to the cinema. • Film makers have to create ‘Hybrid’ films, which are combined genres to create a broader range, to draw more people into the cinema, all it is about is bums on seat which means more money for the fill company. • Genre has changed over time, big film companies such as Paramount used to create comedies, whereas W,B used to create gangster films and musicals, these how now changed over time as they have all started to spread there genres out and not focusing on one type of genre they have started to make others too. •

Chosen Genre (Horror)
Horror films are movies that strive to elicit the emotions of fear, horror and terror from viewers. Their plots frequently involve themes of death, the supernatural or mental illness. Many horror movies also include a central villain. Early horror movies are largely based on classic literature of the gothic/horror genre, such as Dracula, Frankenstein, The Phantom of the Opera and Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. More recent horror films, in contrast, often draw inspiration from the insecurities of life after World War II, giving rise to the three distinct, but related, sub-genres: the horror-ofpersonality Psycho film, the horror-ofarmageddon Invasion of the Body Snatchers film, and the horror-of-the-demonic The Exorcist

lighting is very important in creating a very successful film. What ever the Genre of a film is, lighting is important, action and comedy still need it, but they don’t use is it to there advantage as a horror film would. • The horror Genre, needs to use lighting to create the atmosphere. • It uses the light to create a scary atmosphere, they tend to use mild lighting, as people are scared of the dark. • It makes a sense of loneliness, it makes people feel uncomfortable, such as the horror genre tends to use the night to cause discomfort to people. • They use lighting with the character such as giving them a torch which doesn’t work so you can only see a outline of the character so you cant see what they are looking at and it makes the view feel discomfort as they are worried about the character.

• The sound in films is much as important to lighting, sounds are key in the horror genre, they define it, Action films have sounds of explosions and gun fire, whereas horror films use sounds such as, creaking, footsteps, and sounds of scream, also the sound of the monster its self. •
