Associating letters
of the alphabet with
words.

Introduction:
Using the ABC Alphabet GoGo
Flashcards app, as a class, read out the
sound the letter makes, followed by the
word associated with each letter in the app.

Informal diagnostic
assessment
Through
observation,
determine students
understanding of the
alphabet and letter
recall ability.
Informal diagnostic
assessment
Through
observation,
determine students
understanding of
word association.

Teacher Considerations
-It would be useful to have
more confident students
read/sing out sections of the
story independently. It is
important not to single out
students that may struggle in
front of the class.
-If the class is confident
enough you could run this
activity in a circle, students
reading out the sound and
associated word of one letter
each.

uppercase and
lowercase letters.

Content:
Using the app iCan Write (or free version
Letter Quiz Alphabet Racing Game)
students use their ipads to trace each letter
of the alphabet in upper and lower case and
then re-write each letter they trace into their
workbook.

Informal summative
assessment If
possible, teacher
should try to work
briefly one on one
with each student to
determine their
ability/ achievement
level.

-To extend students working

at a higher level, ask them to
also write a word starting with
each letter and/or draw a
picture.
-To simplify the activity for
less capable students, simply
limit the activity to tracing on
the ipad only.

Reflection of
learning.

Conclusion:
Ask students the following:
-What did you learn from the lesson?
-Is there something you think you still need
more practice on?
-What did you like about the lesson?
-Was there anything you did not enjoy
about todays lesson?
Collaborate ideas on the whiteboard.

Informal summative
Reflect on student
feedback in regards
to successes and
improvements that
could be made on
the lesson. Reflect
on what students
may need more work
on or need to extend
further.

-Make sure to allow time to

pack up ipads etc.
-It is important to try and
obtain at least one piece of
feedback from each student to
gauge their understanding.
This could be done by sitting
students in a circle asking
them to go around and each
share one point.
