Community Transition Program Activity Binder

During my practicum at Community Transition Program I updated and expanded an existing
Activity Binder, to provide support and direction to staff at CTP. The Recreation Therapist (RT)
designs daily on-unit calendars and provides individual schedules for each client as part of their
health care plan. Staff is responsible for program delivery.
The Activity Binder was divided into sections corresponding to each program offered on the unit.
Each Program Section contained clearly-described activities, intended to provide staff with
program ideas and to reduce preparation time for program set-up. Activity descriptions included
lists of materials and step-by-step, illustrated descriptions of procedure. To further support staff, I
organized the supplies cupboard, to ensure easy access to equipment.
Activity programs included: Fun & Fit, Arts & Creativity, Games, Community Outings, Relaxation,
Cooking, Music and Open Leisure. Social and interpersonal groups included Moring Drop-in and
Relationships. I also included Community Resources and a brief description of Recreation Therapy,
emphasizing the importance of leisure in the transition process. The binder is expandable and
staff is encouraged to contribute their own ideas.
The finished Activity Binder will provide a useful resource for staff and will support the RT by
encouraging and directing staff to offer suitable activities during scheduled programs. I learned
how to describe activities clearly and simply and to select activities most appropriate to the needs
of clients at CTP. Describing the therapeutic benefits of each activity also supports the goals of RT
programming.
