Afterexperiencingaroughchildhoodwiththedeathofhismotheratagetwo,whatwereyou
expecting?
Ibecameinsane,withlongintervalsofhorriblesanity,ishowPoeputshislife.From
experiencingthedeathofloveonestobeingamemberoftheU.Sarmy,imaginethedisturbing
imagesthatstucktohismind.EdgarAllanPoewasnoordinaryman,butonewithmany
distinctiveexperiences.HislifeandhiswrittentextbothsharesimilarthemeswhichareLove
andMadness.Hislifehadagivenofboth.

EdgarAllanPoe,bornonJanuary19,1809inBoston.Hadtogothroughatough

childhoodasheexperiencedhismotherdeathattheageof2.Poewasthensenttolivewiththe
wealthyJohnAllan.GrowingupmoneywasnoissueforPoe,hadanicehomeandwenttogood
schools.Attheageofsix,PoewassenttogoliveinEnglandforfiveyearstogotoschool.Poe
returnedandattendedUniversityofVirginiain1826.ThoJohnAllanhadthemoneytogiveto
poeheonlygavehimonethirdofwhatheneeded.Poethenwentdownhillfromthere,hebegan
todrinkandsuddenlybecameinabigdebtandwasforcedtogetoutofschool.Withoutskillsor
money,PoejoinedtheUsArmy.Poedidwellandquicklymadehiswayuptheranks.Whilein
theArmyPoesawmanynewdisturbingthings,whichwasacauseofmadnessthemesinhistext

helaterwrote.AftertheArmy,Poesoonwenttolivewithhisgrandmother.Whilelivingthere
PoefellinlovewithhiscousinVirginia.Maysoundabitweird,butwhoarewetojudge,the
timeperiodduringPoeslifewasnothingliketoday's.1831,Poebeginstowritepoetry.After
JohnAllandeath,hisWilldidnotmentionEdgarinanyofit.Poebecameabitdepressed
withoutknowingwhattodo,hemanagestopickupajobasanewspapereditor.Poehadtalent
withhiswritings,howeverhenevergotthecreditandfamehedeserved.Poemanynotof
realizedit,buthewasamuchbetterwriterthanhethoughthewas.Withsomeofhistext
beginningtobecomepublished,Edgarthoughtitwastimetostarthisownmagazine.Thohehad
theliteratureskillstobeginhisownmagazinecompanyhewasntmentallystabletodoso.and
asexpecteditfailed.Poethenreturntoaregularjobthohewasn'thappywithit.Edgarwas
makinggoodpayandVirginia'shealthbecameaconcern.Thestressinhislifeatthemoment
wastoomuchforhimandhebecamedistortedbyit.Edgartoblowoffsteam,butbywriterhis
romanticandnailbitingstories.1847VirginiadiesandputsPoeathisalltimeworstmomentin
hislife.Poebeginstodrinkandusedrugstotrytoeasethepainofhislovedone.1849Poe
movestogoestoBaltimorebyaccident,October3Poeisfoundpassedoutonthesideofthe
roadandisrushedtothehospital.Onthe7th,Poepassesawayandthecauseofdeathis
undefined.

was.WhenPoewastwentysevenhemarriedhiscousinthatwasfourteenashelivedwithherat
hisaunthouse.FromthefactthatEdgarAllanPoemarriedhisyoungercousinshowsthathe
mustofhadaroughtimewiththeladiesormaybehewastrulyinlovewithhiscousin,wemay
neverknow.NeverthelessPoeincorporatesLoveasamajorthemeinhisstoriessuchasin,The

Raven,andAnnabelLee.Bothstoryistoldfromanarratordiscussinghispainsafterthe
deathoftheirbelovedwife.Thetwostoriesareconnecttoeachotherandshareasimilartheme,
whichalsoconnectstohispersonallifeexperienceafterthedeathofVirginia.Thisanexample
ofPoeconnectinghispersonallifetohisstories.AnnabelLeeexpresshowthedeathofthe
narratorslifewon'tstophimfromlovingheratanymeans.Thisstoryalsoshowsthedangerous
partsoflove,howonedayyou'reaguythatisinlovewithhisgirlfriend,thenthenextdaybea
drunkbumthatcan'thandlethedeathofhisgirl.WhileTheRavenismoretospookthereader,
italsosharesthethemeoflovebyshowcasingamantalkingtoaRavenonadarknightabout
howhemisseshisbeloveddeadwife,Lenoreandthathisintentionsintheworldistoalwaysbe
alongsideher.InPoesownlife,hisloveexperiencesinspiredhimtowritebothofthestories
becausehealsowentthroughthedeathofhiswife.Poeconstantlyconnectshispersonallifeto
themesinhisstories.AsPoeuseshispersonallifeloveexperiencesasthemesforhisstory,
anotherthemeismadnessasheconnectsitinbetweenhislifeandstories.
Madness,anotherthemethatPoeusesinmajorityofhisstoriesthathasaconnectionwith
hispersonallife.AfterPoeleftcollegeayearintoit,PoejoinedtheUSArmy.Whileinthearmy
wefoughtwarsandsawhistroopsdeadandkilledotherpeople.Armycanpermanentlydamage
ahumansbrainaftertheyseeallthedisturbingthattheArmyhastooffer.Poecouldnttake
experiencingsuchbrutalandcruelmomentsinhislifeandtherespeculationthatPoebrokethe
rulesonpurposetogetthrownoutthearmy.Whetherthatistrueornot,Poestillbegantowrite
afterhisArmyexperiencesoallthosedarkthoughtsstillweren'toutofhismindandthatisthe
reasonforsomuchmadnessinhisstories.ThePitandthePendulumandTheFallofthe
HouseofUsheraretomePoestwomostterrifyingexperiences.ThePitandthePendulum

occursduringtheSpanishInquisition,whichincludesanarratorthatisblindfoldedinan
unknownroomandissoontobeexecutedbytheSpanishwhoaretorturinghiminaallbrutal
waysyoucanthinkof.Thestoryneversaysifthenarratorisguiltyornot,butitsabreathtaking
storythatwillkeepyouontheedgeofyourseatforthewholestory.Poeuseslightasa
symbolforhopeinthisstory.ThisStorymustofhavebeeninspiredbyanexperiencePoewent
throughduringthearmy.TheFalloftheHouseofUshershowcasesanarratortryingtohelpa
sickfriendinsidehiscreepy,hauntedmansion.Thesickfriendhasasisterthatisalsosickand
theyshareasupernaturalbond.Thesistereventuallydiesandournarratorisaskedtoburyher
underthehouse.Awakeafterherdeaththenarratorandhissickfriendcan'tsleeponadark
night,astheylooktheyseethedeadsister.sheattacksherbrotherandournarratorescapesthe
scene.Asthenarratorleavesthehousehelooksatitasitsinksintotheground.Themadnessin
thisstoryisthesupernaturaleventsthatoccurandthattheyareinahauntedhouse.Poewrote
thisstoryafterthedeathofhiswife,atthetimeofhislifehewasmostunstable.Thisstorys
showstheeffectofallhisdrinkingbyhowitsstructuredwithsupernaturalevents.
EdgarAllanPoe,useshispersonallifeexperiencestocomeupwiththemesforhis
stories.Twocommonthemesareloveandmadnesswhichhefrequentlyusedinhisstories.His
themesreflectedhowhefeltabouthislife.Poewasagreatwriter,buthisstorieswereunderrated
