Production and transport systems

Whole garment production system

Type: departemental whole garment

The departmental whole garment system is used by custom wholesale manufacturers. We

choose for this production system because:

This production system is suitable for our brand because this system is more
effective when a very large variety of garments have to be produced in extremely
small quantities. In the collection of S/S 2015 there are a large variety of
garments, we create a maximum of thousand garments. We have extremely low
quantities per size, because we produce 5 sizes divided in 1000 pieces.

The Work in Progress (WIP) is reduced, as one at a time is cut and the garment
given to one operator and so the amount as inventory is reduced. This will lead to
shorter production lead times.

Disadvantage

Highly skilled labourers are used, so the cost of labour is high. The brand is in the
middle segment, so quality is our priority. This allows us to afford us additional costs
for skilled laborers.

For long run/bulk quantity of same style is not effective in this system. This
disadvantage is inapplicable for our brand, because we dont produce bulk
production. Instead we produce small quantities with a large variety of different
garments and fabrics.

In this case the advantages weigh higher than the disadvantages. We deal with the fact that
we need highly skilled labourers, this will cause higher cost prices. Because the garments are
produced by highly skilled labourer, the operator will try to finish the complicated operation
also without any difficulties. This advantage ensures high quality of the garments.

Transport system; during the production the parts of the garment are transported by hanger
between the different machines and operators.

Calculation Leadtime
CUT MAKE TRIM berekening:
M&T = 1610
C = 10% van 1610 --> 0,10 x 1610 = 161, 0
CMT = C + M & T : 100= 17,71 cmin

17,71 x 1,25 = 22,14

22,14 x 0,20 =4,43
It costs 4,43 euros to cut, make and trim te garment in a factory in Turkey. The production
of the garments will take palce in factorys in Turkey. In Turkey they dont produce bulk
production, but smaller quantities with high quality.

- Calculation Cycle Time

The cycle time is the total time from the beginning to the end of the process of a
garment:
Formula
Cycle Time

(SAM / Number of
empolyees ) x cordsize

Calculation
(17, 71 / 13) x 20 =
27,25 min

Each employee needs a an average time of 27,25 minutes to complete the operations of 20
pieces ( a bundle).

- Calculation Leadtime
The lead time is the period of time between the initiation of any process of production and the
computation of that process:

Formula

Calculation

Leadtime
100%

Cycletime x following
numbers of operations

27,25 x 13 = 354,25

Leadtime
70%

(Cycletime x following
numbers of operations) x
0,70

(27,25 x 13) x 0,70 =

247, 98

26
BITE.

It takes an average time of 354, 25 minutes for the whole process to run and complete.
With an efficiency of 70 % the process should be completed in an average time of 247,98
minutes.

- Calculation Daily output

The daily output is the maximum of garments that can be made in one day:

Formula

Calculation

Daily output
Efficiency 100%

(Daily working minutes /

SAM) x operations

(480 / 17, 71) x 13 =

352,34

Daily output
Efficiency 70%

(Daily working minutes /

SAM) x operations

(336 / 17, 71) x 13 =

246,64

Output 1000 pieces

1000 / daily output

1000 : 246,64 = 4,05

It takes 4,05 days to complete an order of 1000 pieces.
