Northwest splits with Jennies

MARYVILLE, Mo. Northwests Kendle Schieber threw another gem to lead
the Bearcats to a split with MIAA-rival
Central Missouri, which currently leads
the conference at 15-5, Friday afternoon at
Bearcat Field.
The junior hurler threw a completegame, two-hitter in the nightcap, allowing
the Bearcats to hold steady in the No. 7
spot in the MIAA standings.
The Bearcats went up early, when senior
first baseman Stephanie Mark scored on an
error in the second inning. Schieber helped
her own cause in the sixth inning, singling
up the middle to score freshman shortstop
Rebecca Maher.
The Jennies got their lone run in the top
of the seventh when pitcher Jakki Prater
homered to center field. The only other hit
Schieber surrendered was a sixth-inning
single to second baseman Katie Glacone.
Schieber struck out 11 and walked none,
picking up her eighth win of the season.
The two-hitter came on the heels of a 4-1
loss to the Jennies in the series opener.

Central Missouri scored three runs in

the second inning off junior starter Sarah
Baldwin.
Right fielder Madison Hood doubled in
a pair of runs and shortstop Ali Jo Rogers
drove in the third run on a single. Prater,
who played second base in the opener,
scored on a passed ball in the fifth to give
Central (33-13) more than enough insurance.
Northwest (21-21, 13-9 MIAA) picked
up its lone run in the bottom of the seventh
on an RBI single by Maher, who was 2-for4 in the contest.
Baldwin threw a complete game, giving up six hits and walking five, while also
striking out four Jennies.
The Bearcats close out the regular season with a pair of MIAA double-headers
next weekend against No. 17 Emporia
State and Washburn. The two-game series
with Emporia State begins at 2 p.m. Friday, April 24 and the regular-season finale
begins with a 1 p.m. first pitch Saturday,
April 25.

Northwest junior left fielder Kendle Schieber hits a pitch off the left-center field wall during
the first game of Fridays double-header against Central Missouri. The Jennies won the
first game, 4-1, and the Bearcats bounced back to win game two, 2-1, as Schieber compiled a complete-game, two-hitter.

Northwest football coach Adam Dorrel

said hes been looking for production out of
a youthful receiving corps throughout spring
practice, so it was only fitting a young receiver came up big on the final drive of Friday nights Green and White spring game to
force a tie.
The No. 1 thing that I felt like we needed
to do this spring was try to get some production from our receivers, Dorrel said. We
lost so many receivers with (Jason) Jozaites,
Bryce (Young), Korey (Jackson), (tight end)
Marcus Wright. We lost all those guys, so
that was my No. 1 focus.
With the Green squad trailing 14-6, sophomore quarterback Jonathan Baker stepped
under center and fired a pass over the middle where freshman Marquese Surrell outjumped the safety and sprinted 70 yards,
getting stopped just short of the goal line.
After a run was stuffed up the middle, and
time ran out after the running-clock failed to
simulate the late-game situation. However,
Baker got one more play and took advan-

tage by breaking the goal line on a quarterback draw.

That was awesome. Theyre over there
talking crap the whole time and all of a sudden we make a big play to tie it up at the
end, said senior quarterback Brady Bolles,
who started the game for the Green team. It
was great for him, hes been working hard.
That was awesome to see him come out
and make a play.
It appeared the White squad has escaped
with a 14-12 victory as freshman cornerback Jack Richards stopped freshman wide
receiver Will Garza behind the line of scrimmage on the two-point attempt.
However, the defense lined up offsides,
giving Baker one more shot at the tie. Baker again took advantage, rolling right and
finding Surrell coming across the back of
the end zone to force the 14-all tie to end
the final spring practice of the year for the
Bearcats.
Ive been coaching football going on 15
or 16 years now and thats the best spring
game Ive ever been a part of. Just the energy and enthusiasm, Dorrel said. SomeSee DORREL, Page 7
