The basis for building a theoretical model of stuttering will be the work done in

the area of etiology by Logan (1999), Brutten and Shoemaker (1967), Yairi and Ambrose

(2005), and Bloodstein and Ratner (2008). Adding in the lifespan issues will follow the

material found in Berger’s (2001) The Developing Person through the Lifespanand

trauma issues will closely follow the work on stuttering and trauma as described in the

articles by Starkweather and Givens (2003) and Heite (2001). The REBT framework sill

be used to focus on the beliefs and self-talk behind the emotions that exacerbate and

maintain stuttering.
