OVERVIEW
The Lancaster-Lebanon Boys’ Volleyball League had one of its best seasons ever, qualifying four teams for the PIAA Tournament with all four winning at least one game and one, Hempfield, getting to the semifinals. Those same teams, Penn Manor, Cocalico, Lancaster Mennonite and Hempfield, all reached the semifinals in the District Three Tournament with two, Penn Manor and Lancaster Mennonite, getting to the title game. Hempfield claimed the Section One and league titles while Cocalico and Lancaster Mennonite needed a playoff to decide the title in Section Two, which was won by the Eagles.

COACH OF THE YEAR
Dave Weaver
Cocalico
Dave Weaver led Cocalico to its first L-L League section title since 1997 and a berth in the L-L championship match. The Eagles (18-7 non-tournament record), ranked in the top 10 of Class AA schools in the state all season, advanced to the District Three semifinals before being ousted by eventual district and state champ Northeastern. Weaver, who stepped down from coaching after the season, led Cocalico to an opening round match in the state tournament before the Eagles fell to state finalist Saegertown.
VOLLEYBALL PLAYER
OF THE YEAR
Ben Naumann
Hempfield
Ben Naumann was a consistent force for the Black Knights in every match this season. Whether he was crushing a ball from the outside or skying to hit the ball from the pipe position, Naumann was the opponent’s No. 1 concern. Naumann was proficient, too, from the back row on serve-receive and digs. “Ben made the team better every year and will be difficult to replace,’’ said Hempfield coach Mike Vogel. “Ben was a leader for the underclassmen. At practice, he bettered himself and made his teammates improve.’’

The league-wide boys’ volleyball All-Stars, the Player of the Year and the Coach of the Year were selected by a vote by the L-L League’s volleyball coaches.

OVERVIEW
The league-wide baseball All-Stars were selected by the L-L League’s coaches. The Player of the Year and Coaches of the Year were selected by sports writer Ed Gruver.
A season that will be remembered by many for its unseasonably cold and rainy conditions took on a golden hue in district play as Hempfield, Donegal and Lancaster County Christian claimed championships. Lancaster County Christian then won its first PIAA title, as Kyle Ebersole tossed a two-hitter in an 8-0 win over Eisenhower in the Class A final. Manheim Central’s Blake Reiff threw a rare no-hitter in state competition; Ephrata earned the L-L title; Lampeter-Strasburg claimed a crown in its first season in Section Two and Lancaster Catholic reclaimed the top spot in Section Four. Off the field, L-S star Bear Shank showed remarkable courage in undergoing brain surgery and Manheim Township coaching legend Bill Sassaman did not have his contract renewed after 23 seasons and 339 victories at the Blue Streaks’ helm.
