Band of years. This concept has been
given in Lal Kitab.
During particular band of years when ruler

planet progresses in the natal chart it may
show possibilities of happening of events by
establishing relations in various ways as
given below.
This concept of application of progression is
novel and brilliant attempt made by eminent
astrologer Shri. Dinesh S. Mathur in one of
his masterpieces Vedic Progression- Secrets
of Bhrigu Samhita and Nadi Granthas

Here I am trying to apply one of his method i.e. Progression of Ruler of band of years on some
charts. All the methods of calculation and interpretation are as per Shri Mathur has mentioned
in his book.

In this table we can see that each planet remains operational for specific years after birth and
for that range of duration of years this planet is called ruler of band of years, e.g. Jupiter is
operational for six years covering 16th 21st, 51st 56th and 86th 91st band of years of life. So
Jupiter is called as ruler of 16th 21st, 51st 56th and 86th 91st band of years of life. Like that Sun
is the ruler of 22nd 23rd, 57th 58th, and 92nd - 93rd band of years of life and so on.
Progression of Ruler of Band of Years
hen a particular band of years starts then the ruler of that particular band of years
starts its progression in the natal chart from its natal position and after travelling
through various signs it returns to its natal position from where it has started in the
end of that particular band of years , e.g. when any native enters in to 25th year i.e. when he/she
has completed 24th year and 25th year starts then Band Of Years 25th 27th starts and as ruler of
this band of years Venus starts its progression in the natal chart from its natal position. Venus
will travel in various signs for 3 years and at the end of 27th year return to its natal position. Here we
have to take care about progressive/regressive nature of planet in the natal chart. If ruler of band
of years is regressive in the natal chart then it will move backwards from its natal position otherwise it
will move forward. Rahu and Ketu are always regressive so during their band of years they always
move backwards. Sun and Moon are always progressive so during their band of years they always
move forwards. Rest of the planets may be progressive or regressive in nature in the natal chart.
The following table shows duration of stay of ruler of band of years in the sign which is
dependent upon length of the band:

Principles of Calculation of Progression of Ruler of Band of Years

1. For the calculation of progression of ruler of band of years first calculate the running age
of the native and choose the running band of years. Then locate the position of ruler of
running band of years in the natal chart.
2. Check whether the ruler of running band of years is direct in motion or retrograde in the
natal chart. A planet in direct motion or retrograde motion in the natal chart will always be
in direct motion or retrograde motion in progression.
3. The ruler of band of years if in direct motion will start its progression from its natal
position as that band of years starts and travel the remaining degrees of its natal sign to
reach next sign. For example if any ruler of band of years is at 10 0 in Leo sign and is in
direct motion , then as its band of years starts it covers remaining 20 0 of Leo sign and
then enters in to next sign i.e. Virgo and then into Libra and so on.
4. If the ruler of band of years is retrograde then it moves backwards to reach previous sign. In
above example if same ruler planet is at 10 0 in Leo sign but is retrograde then it moves back
and first it will cover 100 of Leo sign and then enters Cancer sign and then to Gemini etc..
5. Here we calculate the progression of ruler of band of years in a native who is running 44 th
year. His date of birth is 21 June 1970. So he has completed 43 years of his life on 21 June
2013 and entered into 44th year. In Table I we can see that he comes under 42 nd 47th band
of years and the ruler planet is Rahu. Rahu is at 100 in Aquarius and is retrograde. The
progression of Rahu in retrograde motion started when native completed his 41st year and
entered in to 42nd year on 21 June 2011 and it will progress in retrograde motion for 6 years
when native completes its 47th year on 21 June 2017. On this date Rahu will return back to
its natal position.

In Table II we know Rahu takes 6.088 days to travel over a degree, so days taken by Rahu to
travel 100 would be = 100 X 6.088 = 60.88 days.
So Rahu took 60.88 days to move backwards starting from 21 June 2011 to reach next sign i.e.
Capricorn. After that Rahu spends 6 months (182.63 days) in each sign till it reaches the
junction of Pisces and Aquarius and then after entering Aquarius it covers rest 20 0 (from 300 to
100) to reach its natal position on 21-June 2017 which is calculated in terms of days by
multiplying 200 in to 6.088 which comes out to be 121days. So Rahu takes 121 days to reach its
natal position after entering Aquarius from Pisces. Thus the progression of Rahu as ruler of
band of years (42nd 47th) ends on 21 June 2017.

Now I am giving another example of calculation and interpretation of progression of ruler of

band of years. This is a horoscope of a male Doctor who is presently working in Multi National
Company. Some of the important events of his life are as follow:

First we convert 52 in to degrees. 52/60= .860. Now we add it to 80 to make it 8.860. So 80:52=
8.860 . Mars as ruler of band would start its journey on 4 Oct 1999 from 8.860 till 300 in Virgo
sign. So the degrees covered by Mars would be 300 - 8.860 = 21.140. In Table II we know Mars
takes 6.088 days to cover 10 so days taken by Mars to cover 21.140 would be
6.088 X 21.140 = 128.7 days
So Mars started its progression on 4-Oct-1999 and took 128.7 days to complete its journey in
Virgo sign and reached next sign Libra. Now it would take 6 months (182.63 days) in all other
signs. Then after it finished its journey in Leo sign and reached again to Virgo sign, it would
cover its 8.860 (8.860 X 6.088 = 53.9 days) and reach its natal position on 4th Oct 2005. Lets
tabulate the progression of Mars.

Interpretation of Progression of Ruler of the Band of Years
ri D. S. Mathur in his book has mentioned that first examine whether the ruler of band
of years is inclined to cause the event. In case it is not so inclined, its progression at that
time will not yield the desired result. The rules of examination as mentioned by him are

After examination if the ruler of band of years is inclined to give the result, then we can
examine the progression of the ruler of band of years in each sign according to the above given
four rules.
We can test these rules in the above given horoscope of Native 1. He was married in the band of
years 28th-33rd when Mars was ruler. So first test whether Mars as ruler was inclined to cause
marriage. As mentioned by Sri D. S. Mathur for the event of marriage of a male person ruler of
band of years should be related to Karaka- natal Venus (in case of female the Karaka of marriage
becomes Jupiter). Also this ruler should be related at same time to the Karaka of fulfillment of
wish or gain i.e. Jupiter.

comes out to be .97. Then we add it to 12 0 which becomes 12:970 Jupiter as ruler of band started

entered in to Sagittarius. So we add 103.678 days to 8 Aug 1927 to come to date 22 Nov 1927 when
JupiterPr completed its journey in Scorpio sign and entered in to next sign Sagittarius. In
Sagittarius JupiterPr remained for 6 months (182.63 days) and then entered in to next sign
Capricorn where again it remained for 6 months (182.63 days ) and entered in to next sign
Aquarius and so on. As it completed its stay in Libra and entered into Scorpio, it covered
remaining 12.970 in it which is converted into days by multiplying it with 6.088days= 12.970 X
6.088= 78.96 days. So it covered last 78.96 days of its progression cycle in Scorpio.
