Video Instillation
What is it?
Class aptent taciti sociosqu ad

Video installation is a form of art installation that
incorporating video footage and is often
contemporary art.

Fiona Tan
Is an Installation artist who is well known of her
film and video installations as well as her
photography.
Tan has exhibited her work in many exhibitions
especially solo exhibition’s and has won awards and
nominations for her work.
I feel her work is so effective as it has emotional
effects on the audience as they watch two individual

clips side by side on portrait screens, for example her
piece named “rise and fall” were Fiona places two
screens in a dark room which gives off a peaceful and
calming atmosphere, as there is no sound that
accompanies the two clips it makes the audience pay
more attention to them. As the two different clips
play next to each other they seem to hold the
attention of the audience as what would be boring
played singularly they are more interesting placed
together.
It is such an interesting art piece because as each of
the clips play they change quickly making the
audience try link the videos together as they change
trying to think of a logical reason why thy are played
together and if there is an underlying meaning the
video installation will mean something different to
each individual as we all interpret it differently.
Her target audience would be young adults- adults as
a younger audience wouldn't be able to concentrate
resulting in the effect being lost on them.

Bill Viola
Viola is looked up to in the generation of artists
whose artistic expression depends upon electric,
sound and image technology in New Media.
Bill has displayed his work in over 50 solo exhibitions
and has been given many awards over 27 years.
One of my favourite installations of his is “The
Encounter” which is two woman walking towards the
camera in a desert just before they turn and great
each other, kiss then walk away in the opposite way
they came. As the video is simple it makes the
audience try make sense of a video making each

individual try think of a back story to the encounter
which leaves them thought provoked.

Spartacus Chetwynd
Is an installation artist who is known for her work that
celebrates cultural history and is well known for her extremist
approaches to these iconic events.

Chetwynd work is recognisable as she is not afraid to
standout and that really works in her favour.
In my opinion, one of her best pieces she
uses 32 flat screens, 8 headphones and
multiple bean bags for “Hermitos
Children, the pilot episode”. I think this
was such a brilliant idea as it might be
very different but i feel thats what makes
her work more effective as it stands out
and draws the audiences attention in a
new creative way.
Chetwynd’s installations also mostly holds a lot of
deep underlying meaning as she tries to use different
techniques to install her work and is also mostly
presented in a narrative style.

My Instillation
I will be installing my video installation using an iPad
and its speaker stand. Like these Video instillation
artists ill also be using my environment to its full
effect by placing appropriate props around my screen
such as my gym bag, running shoes, water bottle and
gym towel which are all the same shade of pink to
draw the audiences attention to my table and give my
environment a strong theme.
