ChiangMaigovernorAmonrapunNumanandhsaidworkonthefacilitywouldstartin

SituationofMICEindustry
Ongeneral,2009isaturbulenceyearforThailandintermofpoliticaland
economic.Thepoliticalturmoilcontinuesfrom2008hasdampenedtheeconomic
growthintheareaofconsumerconfidence,domesticconsumption,export,and
tourism.Publicspendinghasnotincreasedinanexpectedrateduetouncertainty
atmosphereswhilethenumberofforeigntouristarrivalisshortoftargetdueto
negativeimageofthenationintheviewofinternationalcommunity.Theclimaxof
politicalcrisiseruptsontheeveningof19September2006,whenthemilitarycoup
affectedthechangeinthegovernment.
Despitesuchpoliticalandeconomicaluncertainty,ThailandMICEindustry
continuestogrow.MICEbusinessforeignarrivalfigurefor2008is722,059,whichis
a30%increasefromlastyearinwhichthefigurewas555,294.Moreover,suchMICE
businessforeignarrivalhasgenerated49.8billionbathsinrevenueforthecountry,
whichisanastonishing28.7%increasefromlastyearfigurewhichwas38.7billion
baths.
Intermofmeeting&incentive,Thailandranked3rdbehindHongKongand
ChinaasthemostattractiveplaceaccordingtoCEIAsiaPacific2007Annual
IndustrySurvey.ThailandprobablylacksbehindcitieslikeHongKongandSingapore
intermofinfrastructureandinformationtechnology,however,Thaicharacteristics
suchasculture,servicemind,andfriendlypeoplehavewonmanyhearts.Moreover,

ofBali,IndonesiaandGoldCoast,Australia.Thisisagreatturnaroundforthecity
whichsufferedheavydevastationfromthetsunamiin2004.
Onconventionside,Thailandhasachievedaconsiderablesuccess.According
toICCAreport,72internationalconventionsareheldinThailandin2006.The
countryranked6thinAsiaand28thinworld.Furthermore,Thailandalsoranked8th
inAsiaand30thintheworldintermofnumberofparticipantsatinternational
conventions.Bangkokhasalsofairedverywellcomparetootherinternationalcities.

Thereare51internationalconventionsheldinThailand’scapitalcity.Thecityranked
6thinAsiaand21stintheworld.Intermofsectors,medicalscience,economic,
socialscience,andeducationhaveleadthewayintermofholdingconventionsin
Thailand.TheimprovementinBangkoktransportinfrastructureandtheexistenceof
newaccommodationshavealsohelpedmakeThailandtobethedestinationinAsia
forinternationalconventions,conferences,andcongresses.
Ontheexhibitionfront,despitepoliticalupheavalinthepastyear,Thailandis
emergingastheexhibitiongiantofSouth-EastAsiaandithaschargedforward
aggressivelywithvenueexpansioninthepastfiveyears.Asaresult,Bangkokis
increasinglyovertakingSingaporeasthepreferreddestinationinASEANfor
organizingexhibitions,andmanyregionalandinternationalorganizershavealready
relocatedtheirshowstoThailandduetosomeveryindisputablefactors-therobust

Withfulloperationcommencingat‘RoyalParagonHall’&‘Centaraat
CentralWorld’intheheartofBangkokin2007,thecompetitionisexpectedto
intensify,whileaddingmorealternativestoanalreadydiversechoiceofexhibition
venuesfordifferenttypesofshows.Thailandnowhasatotalof6worldclass
exhibitionvenues,whichareQSNCC,IMPACT,BITEC,RoyalParagonHall,

m2,thelargestinASEAN.Atotalnumberofapproximately50tradeshowsare

ApartfromSingapore,Vietnam,whoseexhibitionindustryisemergingonthe
backofitsstrongeconomicdevelopment,willbecomeamajorcontenderinthenext
fewyears.Thailandnowhastomoveforwardandturnthelargerfairsintogenuinely
regionalandinternationalfairsratherthandomesticshowswithaninternationaltwist,
inordertostrengthenitspositioningasASEAN’spremierexhibitionhub.Onlywith
greatseriousnessamongstgovernment,organizersandvenueownerstocompletethis
transitioncancontinualstronggrowthbeexpectedinthenextfewyears.
Theyear2009forThailandMICEIndustrycanbedescribedasgreatsuccess
despitepoliticalturmoilandeconomicinstability.Withtheopeningofthenew

internationalairportinBangkok,SuvarnabhumiInternationalAirport,inSeptember
2006,theopeningofmanynewhotels,andthecreationofnewinternational
conventionandexhibitionhalls,ThailandMICEindustryisexpectedtogrowmore
than10%in2008,creatingmorethan54billionbathsofrevenueforthecountry.

MICEIndustryProjection
Overthecourseof2009,therewereanumberofpessimisticfactorsthat
affectedtheThaiMICEindustryinvariousdegrees.Overseasvisitorswere
precautiousaboutsafetyandsecurityregardingtheNewYearbombingsinBangkok,
aswellas,theongoinginsurgenciesinthe3southernmostprovinces.Worriesalso
hoveredoverdomesticpoliticalconflictsandthecontinuousappreciationoftheThai
