Unit 1

The Q & A forum is a great place to ask questions about the class such as where can I
find the review questions document or I dont understand the difference between a
control variable and a control group. The Q & A forum is also a good place to have
deeper discussions about the class content. [Theres also a community discussion
forum if you want to have other slightly off topic discussions].
I recommend you subscribe to the Q & A forum; you can do this by clicking on the
subscribe button once you are in the forum. This will send you an email summarizing
the questions that were asked that day. You never know when someone will ask a
question that helps you as well. When I am a student in an online class I always
subscribe to this forum (most classes have one) and have found it very helpful. As an
instructor, I am definitely subscribed and get an email as soon as you post a question. I
do this so I can answer the questions as soon as possible.
The assignment:
Go to the Q & A forum and find my post titled what is the meaning of life?
Read and follow the instructions there.
Copy your forum post here and submit this document.

Unit 2
There are many resources available to help you succeed in this class. These include;
The introduction that I have written and posted on Blackboard. This will give you
an excellent introduction to each unit.
Your textbook
The web links listed in Blackboard
In some cases, I will direct you to particular resources when answering questions in the
assignments. [For example, parts A & B of this weeks activity]. In other cases, I will
provide a list of resources and let you select the one(s) you find most helpful. [For
example, part C of this weeks activity].
Answer the following questions about this weeks Activity assignment [The Activity
assignment is item # 7 in the unit within Blackboard.]

1. Which resource(s) did you use to complete part C of this weeks Activity? How
helpful was each resource?

2. Did you use additional resources to help you answer the questions? If so, please list
them here.

The activity in each unit is an excellent way to learn the material and prepare for the
quiz. The activities generally cover much of what is on the quiz; but they dont cover
everything. The quizzes will pull from: the activity, the study skills assignment, the intro,
and the review questions.
Find the review questions document on Blackboard. [Its item # 2 in the unit].Identify one
question on the review sheet that isnt directly addressed in the activity. Answer the
question here:

Unit 3
Having a good study strategy is essential for success in your classes. You have
completed a full unit and had a chance to experience the expectations in this class. This
is a good time to review your strategy for this class.
1. Is this your first online class?
a. If so, how does the experience of an online class compare to your
expectations?
b. If you have taken online classes before, what have you learned about these
types of classes?

2. Online classes require high levels of time management. If you find you need help
with time management strategies, the following has some excellent tips:
http://www.cob.sjsu.edu/nellen_a/time_management.htm
One of the most important time management strategies is to plan a specific time
when you will work on specific classes. What times have you scheduled to work on
this class? Or, when have you been working on the assignments for this class?

3. What study strategies have you been using for this class? (That is, how have you
been approaching the assignments and quizzes)?

4. Have these study strategies been working well for you? Is there a new strategy that
you might try in the future?

5. The syllabus and ***start here*** module have some student suggestions from prior
semesters. (As part of the final discussion, I asked students to offer advice to
students just entering the class). Read through these and pick one suggestion that
you think may help you moving forward in the class. Discuss how you may use this
suggestion.

6. Which textbook did you select? Why did you choose this text? How is this text
working for you?

7. Are there any challenges in your personal life that are affecting your coursework? Is
there anything I can do to help?

8. Do you have any questions about the course so far?

Unit 4
The Intro document I have written for each unit provides a summary of the essential
information needed and can be very helpful when completing the activities. For this
assignment, you will need to have the intro for unit 4 and the activity for unit 4 available.
I would recommend completing this assignment and the activity at the same time.
Problems 1 & 2 in the activity are dominant/recessive traits. Notice you have 4
questions to answer for each problem.
What page of the intro discusses how to do these problems?

What do the terms dominant and recessive mean?

What do the terms genotype and phenotype mean?

Did the intro help you complete these problems? If not, what information would you like
to see added to the intro?

Problems 3 & 4 in the activity are co-dominant traits.

What page of the intro discusses how to do these problems?

What is the difference between co-dominant and incompletely dominant?

Did the intro help you complete these problems? If not, what information would you like
to see added to the intro?

Problems 5 & 6 are mulit-gene traits.

What page of the intro discusses how to do these problems?

Did the intro help you complete these problems? If not, what information would you like
to see added to the intro?

Problems 7 & 8 are X-linked. Notice that the questions for these 2 problems are
different from the previous 6 problems.
What page of the intro discusses how to do these problems?

Did the intro help you complete these problems? If not, what information would you like
to see added to the intro?

The genetic detective work problems are not directly discussed in the intro. These are
applications of the information you learned above.
How confident are you in your answers to these questions?

Is there any information that you would like to see added to the intro to help you
complete these questions?

Unit 5
1. Which of the review questions (found at the beginning of this unit) do you feel you
understand the most completely?

a. Answer this review question below.

2. Which of the review questions (the second item in each weeks folder) do you feel
you understand the least?

a. What resources have you used to help you learn this material?

b. Find an online resource (other than the ones listed on Blackboard) that is
helpful for explaining this question. Explain how this link helped you.

c. Answer this question as best you can here.

d. How well do you feel you understand this topic?

e. What challenges did you face when learning this information?

f. How would you know if you learned this information well enough? [That is,
how do you gauge that you are ready for the test for each topic]?

Unit 6
A good way to study for quizzes and tests is to try writing your own questions. You have
seen the types of questions that are asked on the quizzes now you get to try writing a
few.
You will write quiz questions based on the review questions from our BlackBoard site.
(The review questions are found as the second link in our BlackBoard Unit).
For each multiple choice question - list the correct answer as A and give 3 incorrect
answers.
1. Write a multiple choice question that covers any piece of information from review
question 1 - 3.

2. Write a multiple choice question that covers any piece of information from review
questions 4 7.

Now, write quiz questions based on the activity for the unit.
3. Write a multiple choice question that covers any piece of information from questions
1 11 in the activity.

4. Write a multiple choice question that covers any piece of information from questions
13 18 in the activity.

5. Write a multiple choice question that covers any piece of information from questions
19 24 in the activity.
