    TheactualreductioninpricesinotherstateswouldbemorethanRs2alitreduetoanincremental
    decreaseinlocalleviesineachstate.Theretailersreducedthepricetopassonthebenefitoffalling
    globalcrudepricesinlinewiththeModigovernment'spolicytokeeppacewiththeglobaltrend.
    TheAAPgovernmentaftercomingtopowerhasgivenhandoutsintheformofpowerandwater
    subsidies.Thisputastrainonstatecoffers.ThehikeinVATissupposedtoshoreupthefinances.
    Earlierintheday,theDelhigovernmenthadraisedVATonpetrolfrom20%to25%andondieselfrom
    12.5%to16.6%.ThehigherVAThadpushedupthepumppriceofpetrolbyRs2.78alitreanddieselby
    Rs1.83perlitre.
    Interestingly,thestatedidn'ttouchCNG.IttriedtojustifythehikecitingauniformVATregimefor
    petroratesinnorthIndianstates.TheAAPgovernmenthadclearlyscriptedthehikebeforethebudget
    withabroadconsensusreachedatameetingofthefinanceministersofnorthIndianstatesonMay21.In
    thebudgetsession,thegovernmentcreatedthegroundforahikebyamendmentstotheVATActwhich
    createdenablingprovisionsforloweringorhikingVATonvariouscategoriesoftaxableproductsinthe
    rangeof12.5%to30%.
    WhiletheBJPandCongresshadpointedoutthatthiswasamovetobringaboutahikeinthepricesof
    petrolanddiesel,theAAPgovernmenthadstucktoitsstandthatthesewerejustenablingprovisions
    aimedatmakingwayforauniformtaxstructure.DeputyCMManishSisodiahadsaidintheDelhi
    assemblytheaimwastorationalizethetaxregime.Noonewouldhaveguessedthatthehikeinfuel
    priceswaslessthanthreeweeksaway.
    BJP'sVijenderGuptahitoutatAAPsayingthegovernmentwascheatingthepublicbyimposingthis
    hikeaftertellingpeopleinthebudgetsessionthatVATwasnotbeingincreasedanddescribingitasan
    aamaadmibudget.Hewarnedthatthiswillleadtoinflation.
    DelhiCongresspresidentAjayMakentweeted,Tomeet526crpublicitybudgetAAPincreasesVat4%
    ondieseland5%onpetrolSoonafterbudget?#FailedGovernance.
