ABSTRACT
The experiment was focused on classifying the unknown compounds based on its solubility in
different solvents. Five unknown organic compounds were dissolved in solvents H 2O (Distilled
water), NaOH (Sodium hydroxide), NaHCO 3 (Sodium bicarbonate) and HCl (Hydrochloride).
Each 6 drops or 6mg of the compounds were mixed to the solvents to test their solubility. A
soluble compound will be miscible with the solvent, while an insoluble compound will rather settle
down thus being immiscible. Solubility is a factor in the possible identity of each compound. The
unknown compounds were determined based on the results of its solubility in different solvents
and were classified based on the characteristics of each group. The Polarity and pH of
compounds are some factors, which affect the solubility of organic compounds.
