Young sailors share

a love of the water
CRYC youth sailing team hosts home regatta
By MIKE MONOSTRA
The Sun
If one were to drive along the
Cooper River in Collingswood or
Cherry Hill this summer during a
weekday afternoon, they may see
a team of sailboats sailing along
the water.
These particular boats are not
piloted by adults, but rather kids,
ages 9 to 18, from around South
Jersey. The kids come from as
close as Haddonfield and Cherry

Hill to as far as Sewell and Medford. They have different backgrounds, attend different schools
and have different groups of
friends. However, together they
share a common bond in their interest in sailing.
These kids make up the Cooper
River Yacht Club youth sailing
team. The team competes in the
Mid-Atlantic Yacht Racing Association series on Thursdays durplease see TEAM, page 4

On July 16, Medford Township

Police responded to the
CVS at Route 70 and
Hartford Road for a report of a robbery.
At
approximately
4:30 p.m., a male subject entered the CVS and walked
to the pharmacy counter. The
subject handed a note to the em-

ployee indicating he had a gun

and wanted all the cash from the
register drawer. The employee
handed the subject an undisclosed amount of cash and he
subsequently left the
business.
A bystander observing this subject leaving the business provided additional investigative details and was able to describe the vehicle the subject left
in.
A general police broadcast was
announced, and officers from
Evesham Township located the
vehicle on Route 70 in the area of
Cropwell Lane. The subject in the
vehicle was identified. Based
upon witness statements and
video surveillance, he was arrested without incident.
The proceeds were recovered
and he was charged with robbery,
terroristic threats and theft.
During the investigation, po-

lice determined that although he

indicated he had a gun, none was
used during the commission of
the crime.
He was lodged in Burlington
County Jail in lieu of $150,000 full
cash bail.
On July 27 at 12:57 p.m., a Medford Township police officer,
while stationed at the Motor Vehicle Service, 175 Route 70, Medford,
was alerted by Motor Vehicle
Commission personnel that a
subject had provided a Social Security card for identification purposes and the card appeared to be
fraudulent. Police investigated
the incident and confirmed that
the Social Security card was
fraudulent.
The man was placed under arrest for presenting a false government
document.
He
was
processed and released on a summons complaint pending a court
hearing.

ing the summer, racing other kids

from across New Jersey and
around the region. The team hosted a regatta on July 30 against the
associations other teams.
The team members all have
had different journeys into the
sport. Some have been sailing for
more than five years, some for as

fewer as two or three. However, all

11 members talk of their team as
its own little club.
Meeting new people is really
awesome, said Annalise Rowling, 15, of Haddonfield. As far as
I know, Im the only person in my
school or grade that sails.
Cherry Hill resident Skye
Mada, 11, said she didnt know
anyone in her school or group of
friends who sailed prior to starting.
When I started, I didnt really
know anyone, she said. Everyone was so nice to me.
Haddonfield
resident
Leo
Brickner, 12, said he got into sailing because he wanted to do a
unique summer activity.
Its fun to always have something to do rather than sitting
around doing nothing, he said.
Its fun saying I sail.
Head coach Robert Graham of
Moorestown said sailing requires
a high level of patience. He complimented his team, saying all

members have grown in maturity

since they first started.
Some people, it takes too long
for them to like it and thats when
they quit, he said. Theres a certain level of maturity thats required.
Cameron Acito, 17, of Cherry
Hill said he was attracted to the
sport because of the patience and
maturity required to master it.
I definitely like the independence factor that your actions are
reciprocated through how you
perform, he said.
Its really fun having a big responsibility like this, said
Camerons younger brother, 11year-old Nathan. I like learning
how to race and keep your boat
nice for all of the regattas.
I like the freedom, said
Aidan Ryder, 14, of Medford. We
were alone in our own boats having a good time.
Just like other sports teams,
theres a large time commitment
with sailing. The team practices

at Riverton Yacht Club on Mondays and then at Cooper River

and
Wednesdays.
Tuesdays
Thursdays are competition days
where the team will leave as early
as 5:30 or 6 a.m. to travel to another yacht club in the region, not
coming home until night. Then
on Fridays, the team is back on
the river for another practice.
We try to start right when
school ends, Graham said. We
get some practice time so were
ready to go.
The many hours of practice
have paid off for a number of the
sailors. Cameron Acito finished in
first place in the Laser 4.7 series at
the Brigantine regatta on July 16,
with Rowling not far behind in
third place. Zachary York of
Sewell won the Laser 4.7 category
in Stone Harbor on July 9, and
Chaz Burnham of Collingswood
finished in first place in Laser Redial on that same day.
At their home regatta on July
30, Patrick York placed fourth in
the Opti and teammate Skye
Mada placed sixth. York also
placed seventh in the Laser 4.7
and teammate Aidan Ryder
placed eighth. Walker Schwartz
placed eighth in the Laser Radial.
The team has grown over the
past eight years from just three
kids to an average of 10 to 12 annually.

Medford resident returns to the piano

After playing piano as a child, Stephen Majewski takes up
instrument again, recently releasing his second album
By SEAN LAJOIE

State Licensed Transitional Kindergarten

The Sun
Medford resident Stephen Majewski is a man of many inspirations. After his piano career
seemed to be a thing of the past,
he was inspired to play again
when he heard an instrumental
piece by a Celtic jazz and chamber music ensemble called Nightnoise.
I took some piano lessons as a
child but I did not play regularly,
Majewski said. In 2003, I was inspired to play again after hearing
Snow on High Ground. I started
lessons again for about a year and
then continued self-studying with
the goal of recording an album.
Twelve years later, Majewski
has recently released his second
solo piano album by the age of 45.
His newest album is entitled
Roads. Majewski describes this
harmony as a blend of classical
motifs with folk melodies, evoking a plaintive, wistful, peaceful
atmosphere.
Majewski has always been motivated to write music by his favorite musician, George Winston.
Hes sort of the father of contemporary solo piano music. Hes
the best Ive ever heard, Majewski said.
Majewskis latest source of inspiration was found in a cartoon.
Included in the track list of
Roads are Majewskis interpretations of three songs from the
1977 Rankin/Bass animated production of The Hobbit: Roads,
Misty Mountains Cold and
The Greatest Adventure.
Ive always loved The Hobbit
cartoon, Majewski said.
Maury Laws is the composer of
all The Hobbit music. Majewski
found inspiration in Laws tune to
include melodies of his on his latest album. However, the album itself was not inspired by anything
in particular.
I cant point to any one thing
that inspired me to record another album, Majewski said. It just
kind of popped into my head

ith schools preparing to

open their doors in a few
short weeks, now is a good
time to talk about the upcoming academic year.
This week, were featuring our first
Back to School special section, which
is included inside this issue. The second section is coming in two weeks.
In the next few weeks, well have
more comprehensive back to school
coverage, including a Q&A with the superintendent of the school district to
keep you informed of all the changes
and excitement on the horizon for the
2015-2016 school year.
At The Sun, were all about community news, which, of course, includes
covering the local school districts.
Well be at as many school board meetings as possible and do our best to stay
on top of the hard news taxes,
budgets, elections and the like.
But we want to be able to bring our
readers so much more. To do that, we
need your help.

School news
With the start of a new school year creeping up on us, we want to invite everyone
to share their news with us. From the
classroom to extra-curricular activities, let
us know what is happening in your school,
and well spread the word.

When students achieve in the classroom, in the arts, in sports, etc., we

want to hear about it, so that we can
share that news with the entire community.
We publish an On Campus section
of our paper to do just that to recognize the hard-working students in a
way that stands out from other sections of our paper.
Making the honor roll, winning a
spelling bee, excelling in an extra-curricular activity, its all news to us.
Problem is, we dont always hear
about these accomplishments. Thats
where you come in.
If youre a parent, and your child
does something special, shoot us an
email. Include a photo, if possible.

If youre a teacher or principal, and

you have a special event coming up or
there is other news that your people in
town should know about, tell us about
it.
If possible, well have a reporter
present to cover the event or write a
story and take photos. If not, well figure out a way to get your news into the
paper, one way or another.
Too often, the news is driven by
events that anger or sadden people.
Too often, the good work of young people is ignored or, at the least, certainly
not celebrated the way it should be.
And there are a lot of young people
doing good these days.
We want to change that. We want to
let everyone in town know when
theres something positive going on,
when young people go beyond the ordinary to help someone or have an outstanding accomplishment.
Call, email or write. Just let us know
whats happening in your school so
that we can share it.

Church breaks ground on expansion

The Medford United Methodist
Church recently broke ground on
a long-awaited expansion.
Its new Family Life Center will
eventually house a large space for
contemporary worship, dinners,
youth activities and community
events as well as new classroom
spaces. This has been a dream of
the church for over 10 years, said
Pastor Joe Monahan. A lot of
people have worked very hard to
get us to the place where we can
finally see this vision become reality. The first phase of the project, which includes land clearing,
utility and site work performed
by Blue Rock Construction of
Burlington, will be completed in
September. Construction of the
building itself is expected to
begin in 2016.
The congregation plans to use
the new space to expand its programs for children and youth.
Every year, we run out of space
for Vacation Bible School, said
Associate Pastor Kathleen Stolz,

who oversees the program. It

will be great to host youth programs in the new facility. It will
also have room for half-court basketball and volleyball.
The addition, designed by Medford architect and church member Michael Pagnotta, is the first
expansion of the facility since
1982, when a large education wing
was added to house the churchs
preschool program, offices, choir
room and Sunday School classrooms. The church has been located at the corner of Hartford,
Taunton and Himmelein Roads
since 1972, when it moved from its
original location on Branch
Street in Medford Village. The
church was organized in 1821 and
throughout its history has adapted its ministry to meet the needs
of the congregation and community.
Its important to us that we engage the people of Medford, said
Lay Leader Ginger Harriett,
whose family has been involved

in the congregation over multiple

generations. Our new building
will include a stage that will
make it a great performance
space, and were excited to use it
for events that will connect with
our local community.
Last year, the church adopted
Medford Park off Mill Street and
has sent several teams of adults
and youth to clean up the park,
clearing weeds and spreading
mulch. Several times a year the
church conducts food and diaper
drives and there is a team that
volunteers weekly to rebuild
homes damaged by Superstorm
Sandy. The congregation is always looking for new ministry
opportunities and its our hope
that this new building will provide us with even more avenues
for making a difference in our
community, Monahan said.
During the summer, the church
meets on Sundays at 9 and 10:30
a.m. Learn more by visiting medfordumc.org.

compared to his first encounter

with recording.
Being able to record at home
is nice, Majewski said.
However, this made for a very
different experience his second
time around.
With Roads, I was writing
the songs and learning the
recording software at the same
time, Majewski said. Plus, three
of the songs are piano arrangements of copyrighted songs, so
making sure I had the proper
legal clearance was somewhat
stressful.
Majewski is working on getting
his latest album on Pandora, Spotify, Apple Music and any radio
shows such as Echoes that play
similar music.

Thats a lot of work, Majewski said.

Luckily, he has some worthy
knowledge to draw from after
much success with his debut solo
album. Songs from Tamarac
have been played on Pandora
more than 2.6 million times.
Majewski has enjoyed success,
but he still values the fundamentals of sticking to the plan and enjoying the process.
It takes a lot of persistence to
record an album, so theres a degree of satisfaction when its
done. Arranging songs for piano
is challenging, too, but whether
its composing or arranging an
existing song, the process of
starting and then finishing a song
is fun, Majewski said.
Listeners can preview the
songs on Roads and purchase
the physical album or digitally
download it at www.stephenmajewski.com. Downloads are also
available on iTunes and Amazon.

award grew to $7,500 the following
year.
Now with the help of this family and the funds the organization
receives from the Joe Laufer memorial fund, the award has grown
drastically, and this year it has
given $25,000 to four students in
the area.
Going forward, we hope to
find another foundation to help
with the funding because it is
growing increasingly more difficult to narrow down the applications to such a select few winners, said Michael Pippen, coordinator at the Volunteer Center of
Burlington County.
Among the group of four winners from the 2015 class was
Shawnees Katie ORorke.
I was very excited to receive
the award. I know there are many
students who do important volunteer work in our county, so I am
very happy to be one of the students selected, ORorke said. I
know that Mr. Laufer was an
amazing volunteer in our area
and contributed to his community in many ways, so to receive his
award is a great honor.
Volunteers in the area may recognize the name ORorke, as
Katie comes from a family who is

heavily entrenched in the volunteering community. Katie is the

second of the ORorkes to win
this award; her brother Matt took
home the scholarship money in
2013. Matt is also very involved in
volunteering and worked with
many of the charitable organizations with which ORorke
worked.
Matt created the Medford Students March Against Hunger
many years ago. The march provides thousands of pounds of donations each year to benefit the
Food Bank of South Jersey.
ORorke knew when Matt left for
college that she would be taking
over the campaign because so
many people in need benefit from
it, and now that she is leaving for
college, her younger sister Caroline plans to take the reins.
ORorke will also be following
in her brothers footsteps attending Penn State next year; Matt is a
junior there.
I come from a family of volunteers, so I feel volunteering is part
of who I am, ORorke said.
Growing up, ORorkes family
was always involved in some type
of charitable drive or event to
raise funds for important causes.
ORorke is especially captivated
by causes that benefit children,
animals and the hungry.
Her family has always helped
local animal organizations, collecting donations over the years
for the Food Bank of South Jersey, PAWS farm, Woodford Cedar
Run and Burlington County Animal Shelter. They even adopted a
homeless dog from New Orleans
who was very sick after Hurricane Katrina.
Ive been brought up to believe that every person can make
a difference in their community
in some way, ORorke said.
ORorke has used her talents as
a dancer to voluntarily teach
younger students, as well as perform at charitable events.
As part of the criteria to apply

for the Joe Laufer College Scholarship Award, students must be

recommended by one school official and one non-school community leader.
ORorkes recommendation letters came from all over. She received letters from the organizations she volunteers with, several
principals from the schools that
participate in the Medford March
Against Hunger, her elementary
school principal while she was at
Chairville, Richard Lacovera, and
Sherry Weinberg, who was her
principal at Taunton Forge Elementary School.
I also believe the community
volunteer director from the Food
Bank of South Jersey submitted a
letter of recommendation for
me, ORorke said. Everyone appreciates the volunteer work and
is always very supportive of the
campaigns.
ORorke is excited for the new
opportunities that await her at
Penn State University.

Having been there many times

to see her brother, she is familiar
with the campus and has always
loved it. Shes also attended the
Penn State Lionettes Dance Camp
for many years.
Penn State has an excellent
academic program and the football games are a lot of fun! It had
everything I was looking for, and
it already feels like home,
ORorke said.
While double majoring in psychology and environmental science, ORorke plans to continue
dancing at Penn State. She also
plans to get involved in service organizations and would like to get
involved with Penn States THON,
the largest student philanthropy
group in the world which benefits
pediatric cancer patients.
I have attended THON weekend at Penn State for several
years. Its an amazing event, and I
am looking forward to attending
it this year as a student, ORorke
said.

Being involved in so many different organizations and clubs at

such a young age leaves ORorke
with countless choices of roads to
travel moving forward.
Right now, I am interested in
so many different areas that I am
not exactly sure what career I will
wind up in. My dream job would
be something that involves helping animals, children and the environment, ORorke said.
The four winners for this year
ORorke, Carolyn Bresnahan
from Cinnaminson High School,
Charles Castillo from Seneca
High School and Kacie Stettner
from Bordentown Regional High
School were given their awards
at the Burlington County Library
main branch in Westampton on
July 29. Members of both the
Laufer family and Haines family
were in attendance.
