Qtn. 1: What are some of the advantages of verbal communication over non-verbal
communication?
Answer:
Communication is the transfer of information from one person to another. It is t
he life blood of every institution without which an institution would be anemic.
What we do is a means of communication, subject to interpretation by others.
Two forms of communication at a work place can be verbal or non-verbal.
Verbal communication provides the opportunity for personal contact and two-way f
low of information. Large part of our communication is verbal in nature. Verbal
communication can be oral and written. Oral communication is a process whereby a
speaker interacts verbally with one or more listeners in other to influence the
latterâ s behavior in some way whilst written communication is a process whereby a
writer interacts verbally with a receiver in order to influence the latterâ s beha
vior.
Non-verbal communication includes facial expressions, eye contact, tone of voice
, body posture and motions, and positioning within groups. It may also include t
he way we wear our clothes or the silence we keep. Most of us spend about 75 per
cent of our waking hours communicating our knowledge, thoughts, and ideas to oth
ers. However, most of us fail to realize that a great deal of our communication
is of a non-verbal form as opposed to the oral and written forms.
Even though non-verbal communication is widely used at the work place there are
advantages of the verbal communication over the non-verbal and some are highligh
ted below;
1. No use of technology to interact that would waste natural resources.
2. It is the fastest way of interaction with each other.
3. It is less expensive to interact with people.
4. It is easier to understand a conversation than some other multimedia mea
ns of communication.
5. During a verbal communication you can utilize nonverbal cues such as ton
e, body language, inflection.
6. You can have long conversations and does not require lots of repetitions
because it is clear with you.
7. Speech can be direct and to the point. Some non-verbal communication suc
h as gestures has different meaning in different countries.
