Informatica Data Director Sample Application

Data Director Sample Application Overview

This document describes how to set up the Informatica Data Director (IDD)
sample application that comes bundled with the Informatica MDM Hub Resource Kit.
For an overview, see the Informatica MDM Hub Resource Kit Guide. For details
about configuring IDD applications, see the Informatica MDM Data Director
Implementation Guide.

Sample Application Components

The IDD sample includes:
IDD configuration file (bddDemo.xml) that describes all of the configuration
elements of the application
sample data (sip_sample.dmp) in the sample schema folder
bdd_help_templates.zip to use for creating custom Help (includes a
readme.txt and two .doc files)
readme.txt file
other auxiliary files (message bundles, localized message bundles)
An IDD application is what business users see when they log onto IDD.

Prerequisites
To use this sample IDD application, you must first fulfill the following prerequisites:
The Informatica MDM Hub, cleanse adapters, and Cleanse Match Servers are
already configured and operational in your environment. For more information,
see the Informatica MDM Hub Installation Guide for your platform.
The ORS schemas are configured and contain some test data. For the IDD
sample application, you will use the sample schema (sip_sample.dmp) that
accompanies the Informatica MDM Hub Resource Kit. This ORS must be
registered in the Hub Console. For sample schema installation instructions, see
the Informatica MDM Hub Resource Kit Guide.
Configuration and initial testing should be done using a Informatica MDM Hub
user account with unrestricted privileges to the target ORS schema.
Packages used for search results must already be created in the Hub Console.
For more information about Hub Console tools, see the Informatica MDM Hub IDD
Implementation Guide, Hub Console Help, or the Informatica MDM Hub
Administration Guide.

Setting Up the IDD Sample Application

The IDD Configuration tool is used to create the IDD application for your schema (in
this case, the sip_sample.dmp data). The tool creates an XML configuration file for
the IDD application that you can export, manually edit, import back into the tool,
for subsequent deployment. To work with the IDD sample application, you must
configure and deploy it using the IDD Configuration tool according to the
instructions in this document.
In addition, a separate, pre-configured sample configuration file (bddDemo.xml) is
included in the Resource Kit. You can use this sample configuration file to try out
various IDD features. For instructions on manually editing and importing IDD
configuration files, see the Informatica Data Director Implementation Guide.

Launch the IDD Configuration Tool

To start the IDD Configuration tool, use one of the supported web browsers and
open the following address: http://<host name>:<port>/bdd/config
Log in using the same administrator login and password that you use to log into the
Informatica MDM Hub Console.

Create the IDD Application

Click the Add button on the main screen of the Configuration tool to add a new IDD
application.
In the Add Application window, specify the initial IDD application settings. For this
sample, enter the settings shown in the following screenshot.

Note: An asterisk (*) next to a field label indicates that the field is required.
Click Add and, in the Logical ORS Databases dialog, specify a name for the logical
ORS. For this sample, name the logical ORS Demo.

Informatica Data Director Sample Application 2

Click Add to confirm the logical ORS name.

This completes all the initial information required for a IDD application.
Note: It is a good idea to click Save often to save your work. IDD does not
automatically prompt you to save your work when exiting a screen.
Click Save to create the application.

The IDD Configuration tool prompts you to bind the logical ORS to a physical
instance. Select the appropriate physical instance from the drop-down list (in the
following screen shot, sip_sampl is selected).

Click Save and the IDD Configuration tool returns you to the main screen. The
newly-created IDD application is added to the list of applications.
You have now defined an empty IDD application that is bound to the sip_sampl
ORS.

Informatica Data Director Sample Application

Define Subject Areas

Next, we will expose base objects in the IDD application by defining the subject
areas that this IDD application will present to its users.
Select BDD Demo from the list of applications, then click Edit above the list to
display the Edit Application view.

Specify the Application Source System and HM Configuration

Start by specifying the application source system that will be represented by the
IDD application and the HM (Hierarchy Manager) Configuration.

For this sample, use Admin as the source system.

Select from the Available Items list and move items to the Currently Active Items
list to display on your Dashboard. Use the buttons to the right to organize your
layout. Click Save.

Informatica Data Director Sample Application 14

After changing the layout, your Dashboard might look similar to the following
example.

Test the Subject Area Configuration

Verify that the Person subject area and its children are configured properly.
1. Click the Data tab.
2. Add a new Person (Customers > New > Person).
3. Confirm that the expected attributes and all child tabs (addresses, phone
numbers, email address, and person details) are available.
4. Enter sample data for all attributes. To add attributes on a child tab, click the
New button.
5. Click Save.

15

Informatica Data Director Sample Application

Define a Query for the Subject Area

Define a query for the Person Subject Area. Initially, the search query will be
empty.

Create a New Query

Create a query by clicking More Actions > Create New Query.

This opens the Query Builder window. Define a new query in Query Builder by
specifying the subject area. In this case, define a query for Person.

Notice that the Available Attributes section is updated with attributes and children
available to the Person subject area, as previously defined in the IDD Configuration
tool.

Informatica Data Director Sample Application 16

Select Attributes for the Query

Select the attributes to use in the query. For this example, use Display Name, First
Name, and Last Name from the root object Person; Address Line1, Address Line2,
City Name, State Cd, and Postal Cd from the Addresses child; and Phone Number
from the TelephoneNumber child.

For a query defined on a subject area, as opposed to subject area group, we can
specify an attribute for sorting when the records are displayed in the search result.
In this example, sort by the persons last name.

Click OK, and then Apply to complete the query definition and exit Query Builder.

17

Informatica Data Director Sample Application

The newly defined query is now available in IDD. However, this query definition is
not persisted across sessions until we save it.
Save the New Query

Save this query by selecting More Actions > Save Query.

In the Save Query As window, specify a name for the query. You have the option to
enter a description, make it public so other users can use it, or make it the default
query so that it is first query you see whenever you open a Search tab.

Click Save Query when you are done. The new query now shows up in the Saved
Queries tab.
Test the New Query

Test the newly defined query by looking for a customer who we only know as Ada
and lives in Pasadena, California. The query name is now displayed in place of New
Query.

Informatica Data Director Sample Application 18

IDD displays all the records that match the query criteria specified in the Search
Results section.

To view each record in detail, select the record in the results list and click Open
above the list.

19

Informatica Data Director Sample Application

IDD opens a new tab to display the Person details related to Ada Hardy. You can
see the child records and their attributes associated with this particular Person
record.

Note: The attributes of the record available in this view are determined by how
they were defined in the IDD Configuration tool.
You can examine the Addresses records to make sure that Ada Hardy really does
have an address in Pasadena, California.

Configure Additional Subject Areas (Optional)

To further familiarize yourself with the IDD Configuration tool and the IDD sample
application, consider creating more subject areas to expose other objects from the
ORS and the sample data. For additional information about configuring subject
areas and redeploying IDD applications, see the Informatica Data Director
Implementation Guide.

Export the XML File for Manual Customization

If you want to export the IDD application configuration for further customization,
log into the IDD Configuration tool. Select the IDD application to export and click
the Export button.
The File Download window is displayed, giving you the option to save the IDD
configuration in your hard drive.
The IDD configuration is exported in a ZIP file that contains the following files:
BDDConfig.xml
BDDBundle.properties

Informatica Data Director Sample Application 20

BDDBundle_en.properties
BDDHelp.zip
MetadataBundle.properties
MetadataBundle_en.properties
MessageBundle.properties
MessageBundle_en.properties
ErrorCodeBundle.properties
ErrorCodeBundle_en.properties
The properties files contain localization information. You can create localization
support in your IDD application for other locales by creating other localized
properties files (for example BDDBundle_de.properties, etc.) and importing them
using the IDD Configuration tool.
The BDDConfig.xml file contains the configuration you created using the IDD
Configuration tool in XML format. You can manually update this file to further
customize your IDD application. See the Informatica Data Director Implementation
Guide for more details.

IDD Application Custom Help

You have several options for online Help to use with your IDD application:
Use the "out of the box" default online Help shipped with the application, linked
to the "Help" label at top right of Dashboard.
Create and deploy custom Help and have this second Help linked to a second
label (the default label is 'Custom Help', but this can be changed in the resource
bundle).
Remove the generic online Help link and have only the 'Custom Help' link
available (using a label of your choice).

Creating Custom Help Using Templates

The IDD sample directory in the Resource Kit includes the
bdd_help_templates.zip file, which contains the following files:
bdd_help.doc a high-level outline of the generic IDD online Help
bdd_help_custom.doc a full export of the IDD online Help content
readme.txt instructions for using these files
To create customized Help for your application:
1. Edit this content and save it as simple HTML files. You can also import this
content into a Web Help tool to create more complex HTML and Web Help.
2. Create a ZIP file of these files named CustomBDDHelp.zip.
Note: The Help file must be named CustomBDDHelp.zip.

21

Informatica Data Director Sample Application

Importing Custom Help

To import your custom Help into a IDD application:
1. Open the IDD Configuration tool by opening a web browser pointed to
http://<host>:<port>/bdd/config.
2. Log in and view the currently-deployed applications.
3. Select a deployed application by clicking on the application name (not the URL).
4. Click Import and select Import to existing BDD application.
5. Choose Custom BDD Help from the drop-down list.
6. Click Browse, navigate to your CustomBDDHelp.zip file, select it, and click
Open.
7. Once the file has been uploaded, click Import. The file will be imported to the
selected application. When the progress indicator disappears, the new Help has
been successfully imported.

Enabling Custom Help

To enable your customized Help as "Custom Help" in your IDD application, edit the
bddDemo.xml file and change the customBddHelp setting to true:
<help bddHelp="true" customBddHelp="true"/>
The label displayed in the BDD application UI (which is Custom Help by default)
can be changed in the resource file (MessagesBundle.properties) to something
specific to your implementation.

Disabling the Default Help

To hide the default Help and display only your custom Help, edit the bddDemo.xml
file and change the bddHelp setting to false:
<help bddHelp="false" customBddHelp="true"/>
