Crumbs Off The Table - 10

The Donkey In The Pit
Once upon a time there was a donkey, a very hard worker; very much appreciated by his master who knew he could count on him do any manner of odd jobs and farm duties. One day the donkey fell down into a deep pit that the farmer had been digging to use as a well. The animal cried piteously for hours as the farmer tried to figure out what to do. But the sides were just too unstable to lower someone down with a rope to tie around the donkey, and the donkey was panicky and thrashing about. The farmer also had the additional concern of one of his farm hands being injured and stuck down the hole too. So with a heavy heart, he finally he decided to bury the donkey and put it out of its misery. After all, the animal was old and it just wasn't worth retrieving the donkey. So he invited all his neighbours to come over and help him. They all grabbed a shovel and began to shovel dirt into the well. At first, the donkey realized what was happening and cried horribly. Then, to everyone's amazement, he quietened down. Not a sound was heard for some time and a few shovel loads later, the farmer, out of curiosity finally looked down the well and was astonished at what he saw. With every shovel of dirt that hit his back, the donkey was doing something amazing. He would shake it off and take a step up. The farmer's neighbours, urged on by the farmer, continued to shovel dirt on top of the animal, and he would shake it off and take a step up. Pretty soon, everyone was amazed as the donkey stepped up over the edge of the well and trotted off! Dear reader, the message here is an enduring one, for many of us, too, will someday find ourselves stuck in a situation; µin a well¶, where we will just won¶t know how to get through. The metaphorical dirt will be poured over our heads, and then we will have to decide to either get buried by our problems with no hope of rescue, or we can shake the dirt from us and pound it into the ground to rise victorious. Remember that the trick to getting out of the well is to µshake the dirt off¶, trample on it and take a step up. Each of the troubles and problems which you face can be a stepping stone, so the secret is not to let yourself be defeated and never to give up! ³Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me. Rejoice and be glad, because great is your reward in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.´ (Matthew.5:10-12) Friend, you always have the choice to be victim or victor. Choose the latter! So the next time it feels as if you are in that well with no chance of being freed, think of the little donkey who refused to accept that his circumstances were beyond his control; he didn¶t give up and he didn¶t give in, and you don¶t have to either!
