Church Cleaning, September 14-20, Anita Donahue & Glenda McCall

A Word from Servant of God Isaac Hecker,

Founder of the Paulist Fathers
Such being the nature, character, and office of Religious bodies, the
question now arises, How will the most efficient aid be given by them
to the Church in the present crisis that she may accomplish her divine
mission? [On the Mission of New Religious Communities, 1876]
If you have asked Father Hecker to pray for you or another person who is ill,
and you believe something miraculous has happened, please phone Fr. Paul
Robichaud, CSP, at (202) 269-2519 and tell him your story.

STEWARDSHIP CORNER
24th Sunday in Ordinary Time: In the second reading today, St. James
has harsh words for those who do not put their faith into action. May
we be such good stewards of Gods gifts to us that we can never be
accused of having faith that does nothing in practice.

Bulletin deadline Tuesday at noon.

Twenty-fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time

September 13, 2015

Pastoral Corner

In the ancient world, in which Jesus lived, there were plenty of people who suffered. In a land dominated by the
powerful military presence of the Roman Empire people were forced to obey. Those that didnt were dealt with
brutally. Insurgents were scourged and crucified by the Romans. The Romans dominated people through fear. No
one would want to be a victim of Roman repression.
But here we see Jesus predicting that he will be a victim of the Romans. And, he doesnt stop what he is doing that
he knows will lead to his death. He understands himself in terms of the Suffering Servant of Isaiah. From our first
reading:
I gave my back to those who beat me,
my cheeks to those who plucked my beard;
my face I did not shield
from buffets and spitting. (Isaiah 50:6)
When Jesus is made a victim of the Romans he doesnt seek revenge. He doesnt call upon his followers to fight to
protect him. He seems to be almost in charge of his victimhood.
The readings today help us develop a spirituality to handle the suffering that comes into our lives. Jesus
encourages us:
1.
2.
3.
4.
5.
6.
7.

Try to avoid suffering.

When suffering is unavoidable, dont let suffering scare you.
When suffering comes into your life, accept it with dignity.
Dont let suffering get you off track of what you need to do in life.
Grapple in prayer with the suffering you cannot avoid, and offer it to God.
Forgive those who bring suffering into your life.
Try to reduce the sufferings of others (James, chapter 2)

The Gospel story today makes it clear that:

1.
2.
3.
4.

The disciples had no idea that suffering would be part of discipleship.

Peter tried to talk Jesus out of suffering.
Jesus would not be taken off track.
When Jesus asks the disciples, Who do you say that I am?
he is including the reality of suffering as part of the question.
5. In order to find ourselves we must first deny ourselves, take up our cross,
and follow Jesus.
6. Jesus does not expect us to seek suffering.
7. God will accompany us in our sufferings.
