In this short but seminal article, Kraft and Kraft are the first academics to examine the relationship between energy and gross national product (GNP). Using a Sims causality test, the authors find a unidirectional causality from GNP to energy use in the United States from 1947 to 1974. (This paper by John Kraft and Arthur Kraft, “On the Relationship Between Energy and GNP,” was published in The Journal of Energy and Development, spring 1978, vol. 3, no. 2).
