SCHOOL ASSESSMENT ASSIGNMENT 2

One strength that I discovered on the survey tool was The after School Program which still
needs improvement, it received a 40%. However, according to (Access Your Schools, 2015) the
results suggested to create Active & Healthy Communication such as a newsletter. This will
encourage AHS fundamentals and have a significant impact on students activity choices (Access
Your Schools, 2015). I feel that this is essential for promoting health in school and think that
parents would benefit immensely from an informative newsletter. I also feel that teachers and
administrators are role models and together the two can work on improving the health
environment in the school.
I currently found at schooldigger.com information on Gilbert Eduprize a Public Charter School
that ranges from grades K-12 and its also ranked 153. This school is also ranked as a letter A
school. The enrollment at this school is 1920 students (White 1335, 52 African American, 80
Asian, 274 Hispanic, 17 American Indian, 8 Pacific Islander, and 62 two or more races. The
home type within the school zip code 85233, 82% single family and 17% is other
(schooldigger.com retrieved, 2015). I also found on schooldigger.com that only 6.8 percent of
students receive a discounted lunch. Students do not receive free lunches at this school. I wasnt
able to find from either resources if this school was a title 1 school, the portion of ELLS enrolled
or the average class size in the classrooms. As the school year progresses I am anxious to see the
new after school sports programs to start, such as volleyball, softball and basketball. Three of the
many sports I used to play, I am hoping to see if I can help out in any way I can with the after
school sports clubs.
Another strength I found was Lunch recess which was 50% but still needs quite a bit
improvement. According to (Access Your Schools, 2015) it stated in the results that the school
should provide more lunch resources to help the students get more out of their lunch. I personally

feel that having no cafeteria is difficult for the students to eat lunch because they have to eat
outside in the dreadful heat. Then the students must run around after eating in this environment, I
feel some changes should definitely be in order for this.
One of the weakness I found on School Assessment Tool was the curriculum, studies show the
importance of an effective PE curriculum to overall student health and overall academic
performance (Access Your Schools, 2015). The results also mentioned A stronger emphasis on
PE can go a long way to creating an active and healthy environment. I feel that a Healthy &
Active Environment needs to be infused into the curriculum, because as (Access Your Schools,
2015) declared it helps with academic performances. If this is implemented into the school for
this upcoming year, there will be a tremendous increase in academic performances. I also feel
that different needs need to be accommodated for each grade level in order for each to grow
successfully in Health Literacy.
Another weakness found based on School Assessment is during school. Some simple changes
can have a large impact on your Active & Healthy score, from point of point decision signage to
additional physical activity after lunch (Access Your Schools, 2015). I believe that the school
day is imperative to implement an Active & Healthy School Program which may benefit the
students, teachers and all staff members (Access Your Schools, 2015). This will not only raise
awareness but increase academic performances and provide a better learning environment for all
students. After eating lunch the students have time to run off their food during recess but during
the school day in the classroom are very limited to just sitting and listening. I feel that during
transitions and taking breaks from long lessons students benefit from movement whether its
stretching or jogging in place. Ive noticed that my mentor does this periodically throughout the

day for the students to remain focus and it works. However, I feel the entire school needs to be
on board and implement the same things in their classrooms as well.
One way to improve being Active & Healthy at my school is expanding more recess and P.E.
time. I feel by doing that it will help give students more mobility to move around and be able to
be more successful in the classroom, since they will be more focused. Another area to improve
on would be implementing more health posters and healthy ways of eating and being active. As
of right now there are no health posters anywhere to be found in the school, I am currently at. I
also feel that newsletters regarding Healthy and Active information will help parents as well. By
doing this it will essentially help the school grow into more of a prestigious health environment
to focus on the well-being of students.
One way to apply this information to engage administrators, teachers, students, parents and the
community for a healthful behaviors is having administration take consideration on time and
scheduling for the entire school. For example, lunch recess is at the hottest part of the day and
not only do the students have to play outside during that time they must eat as well. I feel that
there is many ways to fix this situation regarding scheduling. I also feel that instead of having the
students out in the heat they can take time to come back inside in the AC and do some academic
learning but still moving around getting their energy out.
Another way I feel I would use this information to create a case to inform the pros about
implementing more Active & Healthy into the curriculum. I would encourage administration to
consider this because it benefits students which are potentially future leaders of this world. I
would gather the information by showing administration the growth of academic learning that
has taken place. I feel that it is important to implement Health Literacy into the curriculum
because it draws awareness on the students own health. It also helps students gain the knowledge

of whats healthy and how being Healthy and Active may benefit you in the long run. In
conclusion this topic incorporated is beneficial for everyone and should be implemented
immediately.
However, I feel there is more research that I need to obtain for my signature assignment in
order for it to be supported. I do realize from the information I have received so far, is that higher
academic performances with effective P.E. curriculum. I also feel that as a future educator more
awareness needs to be drawn to being active and healthy.
