Principle and reagents for ammonia

PRINCIPLE:
Ammonia in the ambient air is collected by bubbling a measured quantity f
air through dilute solution of sulphuric acid. Ammonium sulphate formed a
analyzed colourimetrically by reaction with phenol & alkaline sodium
hypochlorite to produce idophenol (1) a blue dye. The reaction is accelerated
by the addition of sodium nitroprusside as catalyst.
Range: detection limit of analysis is 0.02 ug of ammonia/ml.
Reagents:
Absorbing solution: dilute 3.0 ml conc. H2SO4 (18 M) to 1 lit. to obtain 0.1N
H2SO4.
Sodium nitroprusside-2 gm+ 100ml of distilled water.
Sodium hypochlorite solution: Dilute 5-6% analytical reagent sodium
hypochlorite with distilled water to give a 0.1 N solution. (3.7%) strength is
determined with idometeric titration.
Phenol solution(45%) v/v pour 50 gm phenol in 100 ml warm cylinder & fill it
up to 100ml .
Buffer: 50 gm Na3PO4.12H2O+74 ml
