Summary

The role of the Emperor Constantine VII Porphyrogenitus (945959)

in the creation of the chapter on Dalmatia (2930) in the work De
Administrando Imperio is primarily related to the issue of authorship of
Chapter 30, considered by most scholars to have been added after his death.
The key arguments behind assigning a later date to this Chapter were the news
of the subjugation of White Croats to the German Emperor Otto I, who is
described as and of the good relations between the Croats and the
Hungarians - reportedly feasible only after Ottos victory over the Hungarians
in the Battle of Lechfeld in 955. However, all of that could have been known
also at the time when Constantine was working on De Administrando Imperio
(948952), and certainly during his lifetime. Insufficient insight into the nature
of the entire work led to overemphasized incongruities between Chapter 30
and the adjacent chapters, even though contradictions and data discrepancies
featured in other sections as well. Thus, the specific hints indicating the
authors identical positions and reasoning present in Chapter 30 and the rest of
the work were ignored, together with the compatibilities of some geographic
information, supporting the claim that all the chapters in this work were
produced by the same author.

AND BULGARIAN EMPRESS ANNE
(A CONTRIBUTION TO THE STUDY OF THE MARRIAGES
OF KING MILUTIN)
Summary

Life and carrer of Anne (in later sources mentioned as Neda or

Dominica), daughter of king Stephen Uro II Milutin and wife of the despot of
Vidin and the Bulgarian emperor Michael III iman Assen, reflect the
turbulent changes in Serbo-Bulgarian relations during the first half of the
fourteenh century. The aim of this article was to cast light on some aspects of
her biography, including the identification of her mother, as well as the date of
her birth and marriage. These questions are inseparably tied with the wexed
problem of Milutins matrimonial policies and therefore they are discussed in
the wider context.
In Serbian historiography it is usually assumed that Annes mother was
a Serbian noblewoman, the first wife of king Milutin. However, material from
Angevin archives, including Annes correspondence with Neapolitan king Robert
I Wise (13091343) and his successor queen Joanna I (13431382) as well as
several documents related to Annes son Lodovico, undoubtedly show that she
must have been the daughter of Milutin and his Hungarian wife Elisabeth.
The prevalent opinion in historiography is that the marriage between
Milutin and Elisabeth was concluded at the end of 1283 and that it lasted less
than a year. However, this is yet another long-held view that has to be rejected.
As it was recently pointed out, the marriage could have been concluded only
in the last decade of the thirteenth century, more precisely after the death of
Elisabeths first husband, Czech noble Zavish of Falkenstein in 1290.
Furthermore, it may be deduced that it took place after Milutins former fatherin-law, Bulgarian emperor George I Terter, was ousted from the power, i.e.
around 1292. Taking into account that two daughters were born out of this
marriage Anne, as well as princess Zariza, the relationship between Milutin
and Elisabeth couldnt have been short-lived; probably, it ended shortly before
late 1298, when the Serbian king entered the negotiations with Byzantine court
about marital alliance.

Anne was born at earliest around 1293 and she was married in the first
decade of the fourteenth century. The precise date of her marriage is impossible
to determine with certainty, but there is no doubt that it took place after the
death of Nogai and establishment of Theodore Svetoslav as Bulgarian emperor,
at the time when Milutin, according to the words of Serbian archbishop Danilo
II saw the commitment, obedience and service of iman, Michaels father
and prince of Vidin, towards him.

MEDIEVAL ARISTOCRATIC BOSNIAN FAMILY
Summary
On the basis of published sources and literature, in this paper author
has shown the role and importance of the aristocratic family Radojevi-Mirkovi
from Bosna, i.e. of some of its members in time and place where they lived and
acted. The activities of Radojevi-Mirkovi family could be followed through
the historical documents for some 7 decades. They came from small vilage
near castle Dubrovnik in central Bosnia. We do not have enough information
to determine precisely its origin. The most famous members of this family were
Mirko Radojevi (12821404/05) and Bati Mirkovi (14051420).

nclosures for biography
Summary
Kiril ivkovi, bishop of Pakrac-Slavonia diocese, was one of the most
educated priests among clergy of Sremski Karlovci metropolis. He was born
in Pirot in 1730, and during the Second Great Migration of Serbs in 1737, his
family moved to Futog. He started his education in Novi Sad, and continued
in Mount Athos, where he became a monk in 1748, in Zografos monastery.
After that, he stayed in Dalmatia as a teacher in village egar and a priest in
Skradin, and between 1758 and 1760 he was in Russia. From 1760 until 1765
he was a prior of Temska monastery near Pirot. In 1767 he entered into the
service of Timisoara bishop Vikentije Jovanovi Vidak, who took him to
Sremski Karlovci after he had been chosen for metropolitan in 1774. From
1778 to 1786, Kiril ivkovi was seniority of the monastery Grgeteg,
whereupon he was chosen for bishop of the Pakrac-Slavonia diocese. In the
Diocese he took series of administrative measures by which he improved
conditions of priests, churches, monasteries and diocesan administration. He
took part in the sessions of Timisoara Convocation in 1790 and 1791. He was
in a close relation with orthodox clergy in Bosnia, but he also communicated
with the members of Bosnian Muslim aristocracy. However, he also achieved
significant results in the field of literature. Beside transcriptions of
hagiographies, he wrote catechisms, guides and other writings. He was
translating theological works from various languages into Serbian. In the
Bishop`s Palace he founded very significant library. He died in Pakrac in 1807.

THE STATE AUDIT INSTITUTION IN PRINCEDOM OF SERBIA:
FOUNDING AND FIRST PERIOD OF ACTIVITY (1843-1858)
Summary
The State Audit Institution in Serbia was founded in 1843 and it was
named The Main Control. It was a part of the State Council and it was put
under Councils supervision. Controls task was to inspect yearly accounts of
all state and public institutions. Its activity proved to be quite beneficiary for
the state and its finances. However, the Control was inefficient. It kept lacking
behind with inspecting accounts year after year, so they were piling up. Such
development was caused by the insufficient number of employees and certain
drawbacks of the Law on Main Control. Eventually, the new Law was passed
in 1858, which considerably broadened Controls authorities and thus provided
an excellent foundation for its future work.

ROYAL SERBIAN PRIMARY SCHOOL IN SIJARINA
(for Albanian children)
Summary
The primary school in village Sijarina began operating in 1898. Its
task was to educate the Albanian children. The reasons for setting up the school
were various, but not solely educative. First and foremost, parallel to attaining
independence in 1878 Serbia also assumed the international obligation
stipulated by the Berlin Treaty to observe the minority rights of its proper nonorthodox population. That affected, among others, the Albanian Muslim
population of the Vranje district for whom a school building and a mosque
were constructed in Sijarina in 1882 and donated by King Milan Obrenovic. On
the other hand, Serbia faced the brigand armed attacks of its yesterdays
subjects, mostly Albanians, who, fleeing Serbia made homes in the Kosovo
vilayet along the Serbian border. This was another reason to build a mosque and
a school so as to neutralize as best as possible the effect of the Albanian assaults
among Albanian population which stayed on to live in Serbia. Third and
probably most important reason was the complicated Serb-Albanian relations
in the Kosovo vilayet and the terror that Albanians and their rulers imposed
over the Serbian population. In order to mitigate at least to some extent the
consequences of terror and in the framework of national policy in Old Serbia
and Macedonia of defending the Serbian population in the area, communication
was established with the Albanian rulers in Kosovo. The opening of the school
in Sijarina could accordingly be regarded as an element of rapprochement with
the Albanians and their rulers. Finally the Serbian rulers had a plan to
strengthen the Serbian mind set among Albanian children and their parents
through Serbian education system and to gradually assimilate them in Serbian
society. This plan proved unrealistic, the school operated badly or not at all
and the Albanian population made evident that it is not a fertile soil for
spreading loyalty to the Serbian state.

INSTRUCTIONS FOR CONTRIBUTORS

The articles should be submitted both in paper form to the Editorial Board of The
Institute of History (Address: Kneza Mihaila Street 36/II, Belgrade, Republic of Serbia)
and in digital form via e-mail (istorinst@iib.ac.rs).
The texts should be typed in MS Word application and submitted in one digital
copy. We recommend the use of Times New Roman font. The font size of the main text
should be 12pt (with 1.5 spacing) and of the footnotes 10pt (with single spacing).
Footnotes should be in the footer of each page. Contributors may submit their articles
in Serbian or in a foreign language (English, Russian, French, German).
The text should not exceed 24 pages (43.200 characters, including spaces).
Each text should include, along with the main text and footnotes, the following:
Abstract which comes after the title. It should be written in same language
as the main text and not exceed 600 characters (with spaces).
Keywords up to ten words, given in Serbian and English.
Summary should be written in English and should not exceed 1.200
characters (with spaces).
Illustrations and charts If any, should be submited apart from the Word
document in one of the following digital formats .tiff, .jpg, .eps, .cdr. Black and white
illustrations should be at resolution of at least 150, and color ones at least 300 dpi.
How to cite:
Monographs:
Name of the author(s) should be written just as an inital, with space between name
and full surname, in regular font. In the first citation of a monograph, its title should
contain complete information, in italic font. Place and year of publication are
written after the title, without a comma in between. Cited pages are written at the
end, without abbreviations for the words page and pages.
Examples:

Second edition of a book:
- . , , I, 19782, 30.
Articles in journals:
Name of the author(s) should be written just as an inital, with space between name
and full surname, in regular font. The title of the article should be in italic font,
followed by the journal title (full or abbreviated name), its volume and/or number
(in arabic numbers), year (in the brackets) and cited page all in regular font.
Examples:

- . , 1933. ,
4546 (1998-1999) 2000, 245.
(example for the journals in which the year that refers to the volume does not
match with the year of the actual publication)

Articles in edited volumes / collections of works:
Name of the author(s) should be written just as an inital, with space between name
and full surname, in regular font. The title of the article should be in italic font,
followed by the title of the collection of works, place and year of publication and
cited page all in regular font.
Example:

Chapters in books (collective works):
The name of the publication should be written in italic, followed by the volume,
place and year of publication, cited page and the name of the author(s) (in the
brackets) all in regular font.

After the first citation of the full bibliographic unit in footnotes, every other
citation should be given in abbreviated form which includes the initial of the name
and surname of the author(s) and shortened title.
For successive references to the same author and work use: Isto, Ibid.
For repeted reference to the work: nav. delo, op. cit.
In Serbian language the abbreviation up. should be used, while in the foreign
languages the form is cf.
Footnotes are abbreviated with nap. (in English: note)
The abbreviations str. i.e. p. and pp. are not to be used.
Dates are written in the following way, e.g. March 2nd 2007 (2. mart 2007.)
Numbers with more than three digits should be written with dots, without spaces, e.g.
2.000, 10.000.
The Contributors control and insert editorial interventions in the digital version of their
texts. If they have any objections to the interventions received from the Editiorial Board
they should clearly note that on a printed version of the text.
The admition deadline for the current year is May 1st.
