How to Play the Locrian Pentatonic Scale on Guitar ‘As we develop our improvisational skills on the guitar, we quickly realize that improvising in major keys is more often than not, easier than improvising over minor key progressions. Because of this, many guitarists tend to shy away from really digging into exploring minor-key tonalities, and instead spend more time on the easier to navigate major progressions in the practice room. Though there are myriad scales and modes that you can use when improvising over minor key progressions, especially the minor iim7b5-V7alt-im6 progression which has a ton of different modes to choose from in an improvisational context, sometimes something as simple as a pentatonic scale can be used to outline these changes, without getting too far out of our comfort zone at the same time. In this article we'll be exploring the Locrian Pentatonic Scale, which can be used to improvise over m7bS chords and which sits very nicely on the fingerboard, making it easy to learn and easy to apply to a musical situation. Check this scale out. It can really help to open up your minor-key improvising, without forcing you to learn a bunch of new modes and longer-form scales in the process. Notice how the pattern sounds in the context of the lick, and how it sounds when applied to a non-pentatonic scale, in this case a C Melodic Minor Scale with a chromatic alteration on the ‘second to last note in the phrase.
