Our Mission Statement
At Lord Byng Secondary our goal is to provide a safe learning environment that

Teacher: Ms. A. E. Hughes
Course Content
EN12 will include the following areas of study:

Novels, short stories, poetry, Shakespeare, language


and usage, creative and expository writing, oral
presentations &/or debates.

W ritten response to literature and expanded depth re:


critical thinking and analysis in response to literature.

Essay development (w/ focus on Literary Analysis).

Refining of Language, usage, and punctuation .

EN12 includes and encourages the enrichment of


curriculum through multiliteracies activities. W hen
appropriate, students will be asked to represent their
understanding of material through mutiple modalities.
Note: Participation in class discussions is required
and expected & inclass writing is a major component
of Lord Byng English Courses.
Goals
Students will have opportunities to develop and demonstrate
that they can:

communicate effectively in written, spoken, and


visual forms.

develop positive attitudes toward language learning.

make connections to other areas of study and to life


outside the classroom.

think critically, creatively, and reflectively.

appreciate their own culture and the culture of

Policies and Procedures

Important: Students are expected to follow the rules and


expectations of the school and the VSB and need to read
and refer to the policies outlined in their Lord Byng Student
Agendas.

Attendance: Attendance: See policies in the Lord Byng
Student Agenda and in Ms. Hughes's Citizenship Rubric.
Punctuality: Students are expected to arrive on time. If you
arrive late and the door is closed, knock quietly and wait.
Activities missed at the beginning of class will result in a
loss of marks. Tardiness will affect your citizenship mark.
Skipping: If you are found to have "skipped" my class, you
will receive a zero (0) on work missed and a zero (0) on
your Citizenship mark for that term.
Assignments: It is your responsibility to have assignments
completed on time. See Student Agenda for policies.
Late penalty is 10% per calendar day. (incl. Sat/Sun).
Note: Assingments will only be accepted up to 1 week
after initial due date or term cut off, which ever comes first
Extra help: Available by appointment. See Ms. Hughes's
Blog at http://bynghughes.blogspot.com for details.
Tutors
Guidelines for working with a tutor are available upon
request. It is expected that students work with tutors in the
manner outlined in the guidelines.

Tests

Notify me in advance, if you know that you will be


absent for a test. Some tests may only be written on
the day that they are written by the class; in certain
situations a make-up opportunity may not be available;
excuses will be considered on an individual basis.

Your parent or guardian must notify me by phone,


if you are sick on the day of a test.

Contact me the first day you return to school to


arrange for a make up test in English Exam Hall.

Be prepared to write the exam or missed work during


the FIRST English Exam Hall after your return.
English Exam Halls take place on Fridays at 1:50 PM
in A225. Students who fail to attend English Exam
Hall as scheduled and agreed upon will receive ZERO
(0) on the task that was to be made up and no further
task will be provided to offset this.
Note: Scheduled in class essays are tests !
Cheating, which includes plagiarism , is a serious offence
and will result in a score of zero. Helping som eone
cheat is also cheating.
Students and their parent(s)/guardian(s) are required to read
and sign the handout on plagiarism provided on M s. Hughes'
blog (http://bynghughes.blogspot.com/) and return it to
M s. Hughes no later than October 1st of the current
school year.
